Scene - Sylvia's return / Retour de Sylvia

Discussion

I thought that it was very odd the way the men were so accepting of Sylvia when she returned. Did they suddenly change their minds about her? I mean, she left an infant on a doorstep, with nothing but a cradle--no diapers, bottles or anything. And out of the blue she shows up and they so willingly give the baby over? You'd think, (at least in the dramatized American version) that they'd show some ambivalence about giving up Marie...

Did I miss something?

The men showed a lot more ambivalence towards Sylvia in the French version than in the American version. In the American version, they just accepted the fact that she was there and that she had dropped the baby on them. Instead, in the American version, the men talk about how if they were Jack they would try to keep Mary. In the French version, the men say that they are relieved to get their old lives back, even though they find that they miss Marie.

what do you think about ?

Plot point question:

Why do you think that in the American remake the dads remember to give the baby the giraffe when Sylvia takes her away? I thought it was a really important moment in the french version when Pierre gets back to the apartment and, after being so momentarily happy about his freedom, he steps on the giraffe and realizes he'll miss her. Why would the american version take that out'

Perhaps the American version removed this part because in general, they depict the men as more macho/masculine, and this part could be seen as not being "masculine" enough. Showing signs of missing or emotion might not have fit as well with the American version's attempt show the men as less vulnerable overall.

In the American version Jack asks if the baby is really his and Sylvia answers definitively yes. In the French version, doubt about paternity is not brought up in the scene where Sylvia comes to take Mary away. Why would the American version add those lines into a scene that is supposed to show how attached the men have become to Mary?
