Discussion
While I have vistited France once before, I think that the majority of our responses are based on very common sterotypes of French culture within the US. There seems to always be a general association with romance, good food and wine, art and culture, and of course, Paris, all images that we get from movies, advertisements, pop culture....
While in our study France was associated with beautiful images, romance, and culture, it is likely that our views are biased because each student who responded has a desire to learn the French language. I know of many Americans, both liberal and conservative (although more conservative) that associate France with negative stereotypes such as snobby, or boycott France because of it's political decisions involving Iraq now and from previous years. For example, "Freedom" fries instead of "French" fries. Or not buying French wine to show the "hate" aspect of the love/hate relationship that America has with France. Often the two stereotypes co-exist as expressed by the love/hate sentiments of Americans regarding France
