c'est assez amusant de voir qu'encore une fois les résultats sont proches, avec toutefois des différences bien marquées. Tout le monde semble souligner l'importance du respect des autres, et de l'implication politique. Vous (américains) semblez beaucoup plus considérer le respect de la loi comme un attribut du bon citoyen, alors que les français se montrent plutôt plus critiques de ce côté là. La pratique de travail volontaire semble beaucoup plus intégré dans la culture américaine que dans la notre où presque personne n'a mentionné le sujet! (effectivement hormis dans les école d'ingénieur où la vie associative est très encouragée, je ne connais à peu près personne qui fasse du volontariat auprès d'associations humanitaires...)

I think one of the reasons that may be true is because the American psyche has been brought up to think of "what you can do for the country" rather than what the country can do for you. The general sentiment, especially after 9/11 is that you owe a lot to your country. Of course there's also the flip side to this, in that Americans are definately more hesistant to criticize their country. It seems like the French have more expectations from their country and government- is this why people are more critical?

C'est très interressant! En effet, je me rends compte qu'on ne se pose que très peu la question de ce que l'on doit à notre pays, c'est juste quelque chose dont on a l'habitude, et on voit plus facilement ce qui ne va pas que ce qui marche bien! Mais quand même je ne suis pas sûre qu'au fond on soit beaucoup moins patriote que vous. Je pense qu'on se rend compte qu'on a de la chance d'être français, qu'on aimerait que la situation dans le pays s'améliore etc., mais que pour autant on n'est pas prêts à s'abandonner complètement aux mains des politiques!!

I completely agree- I think it would be better if
Americans were more like the French in realising that being critical is not a sign of being unpatriotic. A lot of times when someone writes an editorial or something criticizing Bush, there will be angry responses saying how people should be supportive of the president no matter what, because its a "time of war."

C'est vrai qu'en France on ne supporte pas autant le gouvernement qu'aux Etats Unis, mais parfois c'est aussi gênant : j'ai souvent l'impression que les Francais cherchent toujours une bonne raison pour critiquer le gouvernement ou les mesures proposées... C'est vrai que la critique est constructive mais parfois c'est un peu trop ! Il faut trouver le juste milieu entre trop de critiques et trop défendre son gouvernement, et c'est le plus difficile je pense.

I think it is funny how even in this word, Americans somehow manage to mention emotions. One needs not care only about the law, but also the other people. I think the reason law was stressed on both sides was because of the exact word "citizen."<BR><BR>I agree with Samiksha as well but had not thought of the conversation this way. A lot of the editorials and cartoons are not just criticizing something but are making people aware of the problems that they see happen and it is up to us as Americans to decide whether or not we want to attempt to do something about it. We are said to have all these freedoms and value them but I think it's interesting how some people have a certain mentality where they feel other Americans should just accept what is going on. This is contrary, I think, to what a lot of people believe in.
