Heya. Many of your responses talk about "homogenization" and similar terms indicating an emerging new "world culture" being brought about by globalization. Do you feel like the French culture is threatened by globalization? How do you feel about English becoming the language of choice for many international purposes?

Tous les pays du monde sont menacés par la mondialisation et la France aussi. Je pense que chaque culture à quelque chose de positif à apporter aux autres, mais il est important de conserver nos différences culturelles qui font nos société. Si tout le monde s'aligne sur le même modèle, nos particularités s'effaceront et notre patrimoine par la même occasion. N'avez-vous pas ce sentiment d'uniformisation ? D'autre part cela fait longtemps que l'anglais est la langue la plus parlée dans le monde. Nous n'avons donc pas d'autre choix que de s'aligner sur ce facteur et apprendre le mieux possible à parler anglais. Cela ne me pose pas de problème particulier et je suis tout de même fière de parler le français (langue qui est aussi parlé dans de nombreux pays). Du fait que votre langue soit internationale, avez-vous envie de faire l'effort d'apprendre le français ou n'y voyez-vous pas d'intérêt ?

I feel that for Americans the effects of globalization are a little different because it's mainly our culture that's being exported to other places. The main concerns you hear here are about outsourcing jobs to other countries. While nowadays Americans tend to expect to be able to get around anywhere in the world knowing just English, there has been a greater emphasis on teaching a second language in schools. For example, Spanish has been gaining popularity due to the fact that a large percentage of Americans are of hispanic decent. To answer your question, I think the reason a lot of us have decided to study French is because we feel it's important to know a second or third language, especially in an age in which business is carried out on a worldwide scale.

It's interesting that you wrote that all countries' cultures and heritage are threatened by globalization-- American culture is already such a blend of different cultures that I feel that increasing input from other nations will enrich it rather than contaminate it. Then again, America does not have a long cultural history in the same way France does. Also, I feel that a lot of globalization is really Westernization-- other countries becoming more like North America and Europe.

I am learning French because French is still a global language. It's important to know another language to communicate in science, engineering, and business, and English and French are the two major languages of global communication. The Olympics are a good example: everything is announced in English, French, and the host country's language.

La globalisation sonne ''planetaire''. Oh, quel rendez-vous! Mais ne nous ruons pas sur ce plat encore fumant. Cela pourra même prendre beaucoup de temps, voire jamais prêt.
