I thought the responses of American and Russian students were fairly similar. Both emphasized motivation, desire to learn more, and the completion of given tasks on time. However, American students also mentioned the importance of participation and communication with other students and teachers, something the Russian students do not seem very concerned with, showing the difference between cultures and the education systems.

It seemed to me that Russian and American students have very similar ideas of what makes a good student. The responses from both sides show that a good student is someone who takes an active interest in their education and works hard to succeed.

As compared to other exchange topics, I think that differences in responses stemmed more from our cultural attitudes rather than from differences in the school systems.

I think the qualities of a good student are something that are the same in both Russian and American mentalities. Both think that the student must be motivated, responsible, and industrious. 

Ответы русских и американских студентов схожи; единственное, что бросается в глаза - это упоминание о том, что хороший студент эффективно взаимодействует с другими студентами.

Ответы американских студентов показывают то, что они активно принимают участие в социальной жизни, в то время как для большинства из нас процесс обучения - это, в основном, получение знаний.

По моему мнению российские и американские студенты имеют схожие представления о понятии "хороший студент". Это добросовестный студент, который умеет сочитать учебу со своими хобби и интересами.

Я не согласна была с определением "alert": не думаю, что студенту обязательно приходить на лекции встревоженным. Конечно, понятно, что тревожность эта незначительна и вызвана самими занятитями, но я не считаю, что в идеале хороший студент должен быть беспокойным.

Соглашусь, что наши ответы были достаточно схожими. И для русских и для американских студентов знания очень важны.

Очень интересно, что американцы написали, что хороший студент-это человек, стремящийся к постоянному самообразованию. Я полностью согласна с этой идеей. Можно ведь учиться не только сидя в классе, но и вне его, если, конечно, у студента есть к этому тяга...

Оль, может я конечно не права, но мне кажется что слово "alert" здесь подразумевалось скорее не как "встревоженный", но как "бдительный". Но это лишь мое мнение..

Ну, я думаю, бдительность тоже особого покоя не выражает. Бдительный - значит, что человек в некотором роде недоверчивый. Можно же ведь спокойно приходить в университет и учиться.=)

American and Russian student responses seemed to be similar, in that a good student is motivated and puts effort into learning.  One Russian student's response said that students must respect their teacher, an idea missing from all of the American responses.  I thought was interesting, and perhaps indicative of how the student-teacher relationship various in the two different cultural contexts.

Yes, here the word "alert" means that the student pays attention, and is not thinking about something else during class. Generally, I think our ideas of what makes a good student are very similar.

Agreeing with what has been said above...both sets of students emphasized diligence and attention to work. We also both thought it was important to want to learn, instead of just having it forced on us.

Да, я тоже согласна с тем, что мнения о "хорошем студенте" у нас сходятся, но обратила внимание на то, что кто-то из американских студентов упомянул что-то вроде взаимодействия с другими студентами...а никто из русских об этом даже не подумал.

I agree with the comments above - most answers were very similar. However, the American responses included getting good grades, while the Russian responses did not. I think this may support the idea that the American education system is pretty grade-centric.

Полностью согласен с Павлом ликиновым. Студент должен уметь совмещать свою учебу с другими  интересами.

Хороший студент- это старательный, ответственный, трудолюбивый, что уже подразумевает собой получение хороших оценок.

I noticed that there were some cultural bias between the two groups of students, where the Russian students were very sure to include professionalism and politeness as a necessary attribute of a student, while the American students focused more on interest in the class.

Perhaps the vision of the tertiary system in America relies more on shaping the student as an all-rounded individual? Someone who emerges from a university with both global and analytical perspectives on knowledge, as well as a well-developed emotional quotient. I'm not American myself, but this has been the largest difference I've observed between a grade-focused education (very predominant in Asia/Europe) and a broad-based education.

American students didn't mention respect for teachers being central to their idea of a good student. It cropped up a few times in the Russian students' responses.
