Discussion

Neighbors, as you can see, is a very positive term in the U.S. and we are taught to "love thy neighbor." However, in France, it seems to be quite negative. Why is this so?

I actually found the french responses to be fairly positive. Words associated with friendship are found about seven times.  I feel as if Americans aren't very friendly towards their neighbors.  It seems we have limited communication and almost avoid each other.

In France, do you know your neighbors well and talk to them often?  Do you have good relationships with them?

Menguy.  Now that I think about it, I do think that depending on where you are living, your relationship with neighbors will change.  I couldn't really tell you much about the relationships between neighbors in the Boston area. I'm from Texas where compared to boston, the houses are more spaced out on more land even in the bigger cities.  Even still, depending on the neighborhood, the friendliness of the people ranges.  If you go to the really sketchy parts of town, most people keep to themselves, I guess for safety.  In the really rich parts of town, again people for the most part keep to themselves, maybe they are too good for everyone else, or maybe they work so much to pay the bills to their expensive homes that they don't have time for their neighbors, or maybe the large distance between each home keeps them away.  However, in the middle in small, big neighborhoods in the city or even the large pieces of land of quaint towns, the people generally talk to each other more and more.

Of course, however, different people will always have different realtionships with anybody in any environment.

Louise, I feel as if Europeans are connected in a better way than in the Americas.  In geography a European may be a person from any country in Europe, but an American is solely a person from the US even though Mexico and Canada (and the South American countries)  are located on the a continents named "[North/South] America".  I think americans think of ourselves as completely independent from either country on our borders.  We do not share currency and cultures in any way.  Americans tend to view mexicans and canadians as foreigners and strangers, living completely different sorts of lives.  I feel as if Americans isolate themselves culturally, a lot of them don't concern themselves with bordering countries. (Sometimes states have many differences. I may be exaggerating when I say this but most people in Texas don't really care about outside states.  We are a very self centered state.)  Oh! also I think because America is so big with so many states, that we forget sometimes of the rest of the world.  Don't forget the immigration issues too.
