One difference that I noticed between the answers is that references to the people with whom one works appears in the answers of the students in France but not among the answers of the students in the United States.  Is this due to a more collaborative atmosphere in France than in the U.S.?  Also, I noticed that words referring to the qualifications for working appear only on one side.  Are there greater qualification expectations?  Or is one group approaching the word from a more practical sense and the other from a more idealistic sense?

En France, les diplômes ont beaucoup d'importance, l'expérience et le vécu s'effacent devant certains diplômes prestigieux (grandes écoles); l'élite française est issue des grandes écoles; pour ce qui est de l'atmosphère au travail, je ne suis pas sûr qu'en France, les relations soient plus détendues qu'aux USA. Quand on voit les entreprises américaines, on a l'impression qu'il y a plus de contacts et surtout moins de hiérarchie qu'en France!

Comment voyez-vous cette notion de hiérarchie dans le monde du travail?

Je trouve que du côté américain l'aspect négatif du travail est mis davantage en avant : difficulté ,fatiguant, qui prend du temps, stressant,..Il y a aussi l'expression "hard to find". Trouvez vous qu'il est difficile de trouver un emploi aux Etats Unis?

Je suis d'accord avec pauline, le mot travail semble rimer plus avec labeur qu'avec avenir, accomplissement personnel (sans parler de la conjoncture actuelle ). Comment imaginez vous votre entrée dans le monde du travail? Etes vous plutôt heureux ou anxieux à l'idée de travailler?

François-Xavier, same as you, I also have the impression that in France there is a stronger hierarchy and also a more complicated bureaucracy than in the US. I personally find that flexible and morre informal environments make your life easier, but I understand that changing things like hierarchy is difficult, as there is a lot of inertia in the system.

Pauline, I am actually looking for a job right now, and I also know several other MIT students who are or have recently been in the same situation, both American and foreign citizens. The job market here is extremely bad right now, particularly for people like me who want to do research or work at a university (I guess research funding gets cut ouf first when the economic crisis strikes). There have been hiring freezes in many American universities, and I read an article in the NYT last week about how the academic job market is particularly terrible. A friend of mine (who is not French) has been more lucky finding a good academic job in France than in the USA, and this may be the case for me as well. Actually, in my research field, the level of French institutions is very high (higher than most other European countries and comparable to the US). So maybe France is becoming the new land of opportunity!

Louise, in my case I feel both anxious (about landing a job I am enthusiastic about) and thrilled (about starting something new). What about you?

Pour ma part le monde du travail semble loin et difficile à atteindre car j'ai des exsigences, je souhaite vraiment trouver un travail évolutif dans lequel je me sente vraiment bien et cela semble vraiment loin de moi pour l'instant! Cela n'est pas seulement du a mon jeune age mais aussi aux craintes qu'inspire ce monde, cela est vraiment angoissant.
