Discussion

When you say that people who immigrate to the US suffer violence and mistreatment, are you talking about the actual journey from Mexico to the US or when they're living in the US? Because I know a lot of immigrants from Latin American countries, both documented and undocumented, and I wouldn't say that any of them suffer violence or mistreatment in the US at all. (This is just my experience living in Boston, MA. If you talk to people living in Arizona or other more conservative states you might get a different opinion.)

Undocumented immigrants do encounter legal difficulties though, like when they want to work or go to college or rent an appartment. But there are always jobs that pay "under the table" and people willing to fudge the paperwork for you.

It is unfortunate to see we both failed to identify positive associations with Immigration. I am not surprised since immigration is a hot issue right now in the US and the media attention it has been getting has been mostly negative. Immigration is not all about danger and mistreatment. Yet, our quick associations demonstrate how our minds have been influenced by the media and it takes longer for us to think of positive associations since we are accustomed to seeing immigration being bad.

It almost seems like Immigration has a negative connotation.

Like Cindy wrote, it's both really interesting and really sad that both groups essentially see immigration in a negative light. If the media is to blame, what kinds of reports do we think are those that give immigration a bad name? Immigration, like Juan Pablo wrote, is some people's way of searching for a better life, either for themselves or for their family. There shouldn't be any negative connotation.

Additionally, I think Angel is correct that the definition of immigration in each of our respective nations has become skewed over the years.

I'd be interested in learning the degree to which immigration to the United States plays a part in the lives of the Tec students. Do you know a lot of people who have immigrated, or have at least considered it? Does the subject come up frequently in your lives? I ask this because I think a lot of less informed Americans hold the false belief that everyone in Mexico wants to immigrate.

To Joshua:

To Cindy:

Victor:

Yes, i think immigration is a big part of every person's life in the US. Whether they themselves have immigrated or their great-great grandparents, where you're "from" is very important. Everyone has an "immigration" story to tell, except, of course, for Native Americans and many African American's who were brought here forcefully.

And it has always been the case (after the initial settlers and the war against the native tribes) that whoever the newest arrivals are, are the most exploited and disrespected. For example, when the Irish arrived after the Italians, the then low-class Italians made sure that the Irish were even lower.

Each new group tries to claim the US as theirs to whomever might come after, when in fact only the Native Americans, including Cherokee and Aztecs were truly on this land to begin with. Ironically, many native groups did not even have the concept of "owning" land in their cultures.

I agree with Jillian's comment in many respects. The United States is a country of immigrants- even the Puritans, who Samuel Huntington claims are the basis of our culture, were immigrants. Every ethnic group that has come to the United States since then has contributed something to our culture. And even those of us whos families have lived in the US for generations are proud of our "heritage" that we still hold on to from twelve generations ago (I still proudly consider myself to be Scottish.)

My point is that we are all immigrants at some level. I cannot imagine discriminating against a new immigrant, or mistreating them in any way. If anything it would be something to be proud of. I understand that the journey is dangerous- I watched the film "Sin Nombre" last year and was astounded by the difficulties the characters encountered trying to cross the border. I wish that when immigrants arrive here they would feel more welcome than I guess they do.

Diana Fernanda:

I think the reason a lot of us associated immigration with Mexico was due to the fact that we knew we were talking about immigration in the context of a class about Mexican culture. Mexico is certainly not the only country from which people immigrate to the United States, but it certainly is the focus of our discussion and attention at this particular point in time.

Also, we probably associate immigration with better economic opportunities because that is the reason why people, to my knowledge, usually immigrate. Of course, there are other incentives: safety (if coming from a dangerous country), family that already live in the country, or maybe even just a change in scenery. Regardless, I think it'd be safe to say that a lot of people immigrate because they are not completely content with their lives and believe that in immigrating they can live better, be happier, start fresh, etc...

Diana Jaen:

Thanks for your answer. I had a feeling that immigration didn't play as huge a part in Mexican people's lives as much as estadounidenses sometimes think.
