I am accustomed to being addressed by my first name, but I might
feel as though the teller were being condescending
I do not mind because this shows the bank is simply making an effort
to be comfortable with its customers.
I don't care, I understand that being friendly is part of their job.
I would feel a little invaded, but I would pass it off as normal.
I would find this to be an added effort and enjoy the personalization.

Est-ce que vous seriez prêt à investir une partie de votre fortune dans des associations caritatives? ou alors vous gardez tout pour vous et vous vous faites construire une villa en Californie ? Personnellement, j'essayerai d'aider les plus démunis (sans me considérer comme Mère Thérésa car on ne peut pas aider toute la planète) et je me garderai un peu d'argent pour pouvoir m'offrir ce que je désire. Que feriez-vous?
I would probably do something similar. I would probably keep some money for myself, and use some to help those who are less fortunate. Of course, I say this now. If I did have a lot of money, I would be put to the test! It is easier to say things than to do them, sometimes. I don't consider myself to be a greedy person, but I suppose I will never know unless I come across a lot money some way or another. Are the French typicallyl generous (do they give to charity, etc.)? or are they considered to be stingy?

En général, beaucoup d'entre vous ne seraient pas dérangés si on vous appelait par votre prénom, alors que plus de Français le seraient. Pourquoi beaucoup ont répondu, : je souris?
J'ai aussi été très étonné de leur réactions; en effet, la quasi totalité des Français sont quasi furieux alors que les Américains ne sont en aucun cas dérangé par cette familiarité. N'ya-t-il aucune différence dans votre pays que l'on vous appelle par votre prénom ou votre nom?
In America, in a formal setting, you usually assume that you're going to be called Ms. or Mr., especially by someone you don't know .... but if someone at the bank was to call you by your first name, in general, it's not considered a negative thing and most people would assume that the person at the bank was just trying to be friendly or more personal. usually if you have the ability to call someone by their first name, that means you are on a good level with that person and maybe give connotations of being trustworthy, friendly, neighborly, loyal, etc..

In America it is not some aberration to have a teller call you by your first name, it is bank policy. You see this in the ads for Citizens Bank and Sovereign Bank with "Red Carpet Service." The point of it is to make the customer feel like the bank really cares about what matters for them. Moreover, in a small community its just natural for the teller to be friendly and informal as a member of the community. This is important in understanding the American idea of being an individual and not some impersonal number.
Most of the French students said that it would be impolite or inapproprate for someone at the bank to address them by their first name. Is this because your first name is reserved for people that you know better? Is it ever approprate for someone that you do not know well to address you by your first name?
D'habitude en France lorsqu'on ne connaît pas la personne on l'appelle par son nom, sauf quand on est jeune on utilise surtout le prénom. Ca peut choquer certaines personnes quand on les interpelle par leur prénom mais pas les jeunes. Moi ça ne me choquerais pas par parexemple. salut à bientôt.
