Les étudiants des deux pays se regroupent autour d'axes différents : Les français renvoient l'idée de communauté Ă des notions plutôt abstraites, telles que le partage, le respect, la société, la religion. Alors que les étudiants américans pensent plus Ă des exemples concrets, telle que les amis, l'école, la famille, le voisinage. Chaque notion associée Ă la communauté ne regroupe que quelques élśves (environ 4). Tandis que l'étude sur la réussite mettait en valeur des grands axes repris par de nombreux étudiants de chacune des écoles. On peut noter, le rapport que font les étudiants américains entre la communauté et l'école, peut-être dû Ă la cohésion sociale présente sur les campus américains (activités sportives, ...). Le lien entre l'université et la communauté est en revanche relativement inexistant en France.

so, sorority is a fraternity for women. and in case that doesn't clear things up... these are living groups at universities, in the USA most of the people leave the parents home for college/university so they have to find a place to stay. One of the alternatives are fraternities (for men)/sororities(for women). Where not only you live, you have common activities, eat together (if you want) call the other people in your fraternity/sorority (brother/sister) and there are usually greek letters associated to the names of these sometimes nation wide institutions. Did anybody see the 1986-ish movie revenge of the nerds? (Lambda-Lambda-Lambda ???)

But I believe that americans and french have different ideas of community. An american community (of friends and people you have to support) is smaller than a french community (of people you share with)... do you agree?

Hello! I noticed that religion/ church came up several times in the responses of the French students, while it came up only once in the responses by American students. This is interesting, because perhaps it means that French students in general are more religious, or they are closer (i.e. in a community) with their religious groups. On the other hand, this may stem from the fact that in American schools, religion is not often brought up or discussed greatly (with the exception of private religious schools). Is it the same in France?

Also, what exactly did you mean when you listed the word "Hippie"? Is it in the same sense that Americans use the word, and are there a lot of people who belong to the Hippie community?

Salut! J'ai moi aussi remarqué que les mots religion et église revenaient beaucoup plus fréquemment dans les réponses des élśves français que dans celles des américains. Cependant je ne suis pas persuadée que cela veuille dire que les français soient plus religieux que les américains. Pour répondre Ă la question de Gayani T., en France, il n'y a des cours de religion obligatoires que dans les écoles privées.

tu te trompes, pour avoir vecu 3 ans aux etats unis, je sais que les jeunes americains sont beaucoup plus croyants que les francais. aux etats unis les eglises sont pleines les dimanches, ce n est pas le cas en france ou de moins en moins de monde va la messe

Commenting on Antoine's observation "Le lien entre l'université et la communauté est en revanche relativement inexistant en France.": I would say (with some doubts) that the community spirit in high school is much stronger than at university in the US. (Maybe I have solely the MIT perspective.) But still your remark, Antoine, is quite surprising. Isn't there a student community (friends, organizations, scientific clubs or anything) in French universities?

Matthieu, "worthwhile" means something that is worth the time and effort you spend. Or in other words, the time and effort you spend will not be wasted-- it will go towards something beneficial. In this case, I think the person who said worthwhile perhaps meant that helping the community (i.e. community service or volunteering) is something that is beneficial to the general good, and hence worthwhile.... Does that make any sense? I hope I didn't end up confusing you even more.... :) Speaking of community service, do a lot of French students volunteer at hospitals, libraries, etc?

En france, il faut faire la différence entre une école (école d'ingénieur, de commerce, de gestion,...) et l'université (faculté, fac, ...).

Dans les écoles comme Ă l'INT, l'esprit de groupe est assez solide (enfin, je pense, je ne suis qu'en premiśre année), Nous avons beaucoup de club, go and see

to find out. Il y a un club robot, bar, danse, bierre, cinema, sono, radio, bd, manga, babyfoot, jeux, etc... Mais aussi des associations sportives ou educatives.

Alors que dans les universités, il n'y a quasiment pas de communauté. Si vous allez sur le site de l'une des plus grandes fac de france,

, vous ne trouverez que des informations sur l'enseignement.

Pour répondre Ă Gayani, franchement, je ne connais pour ma part aucun étudiant qui m'ait déjĂ parlé du "service qu'il rendait Ă la communauté" en allant aider dans les hôpitaux etc... Cela ne fausse en rien la générosité de nos étudiants, qui préfśrent visiblement s'investir plus Ă fond dans une véritable action humanitaire, vous pouvez allez jeter un coup d'oeil Ă l'association INTervenir de l'INT par exemple ! =>

Mais il existe, je n'en doute pas, des jeunes étudiants qui passent du temps dans les hôpitaux ou les hospices, seulement je n'en connais pas personnellement.
