Discussion

I noted the differences on each side were very closely related to the political culture of each country. Americans mentioned very specific requirements for a president, like "who represents America well in the world," "who doesn't give people reasons to hate us," "who makes a decision about being on Taiwan's side as a country and not with Communist China," as well as other more general comments that nevertheless fit perfectly the current American political problems, like "who follows his convictions," "who is moral," "who puts the country's interests before his party," etc. So I concluded Americans are very aware the world doesn't like them much, and they want to change it. (Unfortunately the government will not allow change to happen so easily).

The original answers from the French side were that a good president "n'est pas Américain," "n'est pas un dictateur," and "n'existe pas." My conclusion is that the French don't like Americans, dictators, or presidents in general. Of course, those responses were isolated and might not represent anything.

I also noticed the same trends as Alejandro did in the sentence completions from each side. It seemed again, that the American students thought of requirements for a good president from issues that they wished the American president would address currently. I did notice that both sides had very similar answers: "someone who listens to the people," and "someone who is honest."

I was surprised to read the phrase "n'existe pas." This betrays disbelief from the French students that there could ever be a good president. Perhaps there is a general distrust of the government in France? Could this be true?

I noticed that some of the American responses seem directly related to the faults of the current president. Of course a good president needs to be more than "not W".

It was interesting to observe that only about 36% of French surveyed have confidence in their own president, while only 21% have a good impression about Bush. Do any of the students at Paris II think that Bush is a better president than Chirac?
