I'm really curious as to why no Americans thought of birth or death as being significant events whereas they're the most frequently mentioned by the French. Also, why might more of the French "important events" be centered around relationships or connections with family or friends, while certain American associations are more self-referential and reflective: events which are "internalized, forgotten", "nonverbal" and "time spent by myself"?
Je suis surpris de voir des réponses comme "ma naissance" car c'est quelque chose que l'on a pas vraiment vécu.
Je pense que c'est un événement marquant surtout pour ceux qui vous ont vu naitre.
I was also surprised by several responses, especially those on the French side that refer to births and deaths. In particular, it seems like the events listed by the French mark the beginning or signifying event of a particular period in one's life (la naissance, ma premiere copine, la mort, mon départ, mon installation, la class préparatoire) whereas the events listed by the Americans are arbitrary and highly individualized experiences (my trip to Paris, living in the Philippines for 3 months, seeing Coldplay in concert, when I'm really able to connect with someone and when I play music). Does this difference result from Americans and French inherently viewing "Most important events/Evenements les plus marquants" differently? Does "most important events" exactly correspond to "evenements les plus marquants"? Perhaps "most important" forces people to make a value judgment and think of events that they personally hold valuable. Does "les plus marquants" do the same? Maybe the use of the word "marquant" in French society is contextually different from the use of the word "important" in American society.
Je suis d'accord avec Belinda je srois que "most important events" ne correspond pas tout à fait avec "évènements les plus marquents". En France nous utilisons aussi le mot important et il n'a pas exactement le même sens que marquant. Marquant signifie que l'évènement laisse une trace en nous, une trace qui restera des années après et qui a un impact sur notre vie, notre personnalité. Voir naitre ou mourir quelqu'un change notre mode de vie, peut nous choquer. Si "important à le même sens en anglais qu'en français il correspond plus à un jugement de valeur: qu'est-ce que je trouve important, qu'est-ce que j'aime ou j'ai le plus aimé dans ma vie? C'est pour ça je pense que les réponses des americains et de français sont différentes.

que ce soit en anglais ou en français, l'interprétation est la même. Un événement "marquant" est quelque chose dont on se souvient, et donc c'était un événement "important".
De la même façon, on peut dire que les "événements les plus marquants" sont les "événements les plus importants".
