A mother slaps
her child

Une mère
gifle son enfant

say nothing
cringe
Feel bad for the child and the mother
frown at the mother but not do or say anything
I am appalled but do nothing because it is not my place to scold the mother.
I feel angry and want someone to slap the mother
. I feel disturbed and depressed for the child, I say nothing and
feel guilty.
I would be disgusted and have sympathy for the child but would not
do anything.
I would flinch but I wouldn't try to tell her how to raise her child.
I would frown.
I would gasp to myself, but i wouldn't do anything about it.
I would not say anything because it is the mothers choice to do this.
I don't condone it however.
I would probably make a comment about it to the person I was with
and be concerned for the kid
I would try to ignore the situation although I would feel bad.
keep walking
nothing, its none of my business, and the child probably deserved
it
Walk away
Whatever kid deserved it.

Discussion

I find it interesting that many French responses indicate that they did not react because they were not sure what the child did, and he may have deserved it. It is a common belief in America that one should not hit a child, no matter what he has done. Also, if I witnessed a husband hit his wife (which would be unlikely, as such events tend to occur in the domestic setting where there are fewer witnesses) I would tell the police. I would hate to seem like I am impinging on the private lives of others, but I would rather be considered to be nosy or rude than to have someone suffering in silence while someone they love hurts them. I would only do this if the injury were fairly serious though, and it is sometimes difficult to tell when the batterer has crossed the line.

I think in both cases, neither act of violence is necessary. With a mother and a child, I see violence (slapping your child) as wrong, even if the child did do something wrong. There are other ways to raise the child. I'm not saying that raising a child has to be all "warm and fuzzy" or that a child can do no wrong, but that violence is unnecessary and wrong.

It's even more so with a husband and his wife. There's absolutely no excuse for such violence. If I witnessed a husband hit his wife, I would immediately feel awkward. If I knew the wife, I would try to talk to her about it, and if it was really serious, then maybe inform an authority. But if they were just strangers, I'm not sure I would really do anything about it. What could I do?

It is very different to see a mother hit her child than a man hit his wife. With a child the mother has the right to raise the child as she sees responsible, within the limits of what is reasonable. However, a husband doesn't have authority over his wife, and this relationship is between two adults. Therefor, a husband doesn't have the right to use violence against his wife, whose behavior it is not his right to control.

I believe that at times it may be okay for a mother to slap her child because it is for discplinary purposes. It is not okay for her to constantly hit her child because that is abbuse. For a husband to slap his wife or a man to hit a woman is not okay. It is not for disciplinary purposes. It is out of anger. They are both mature adults and should know how to solve their problems without violence.

Many people think that violence is the worst thing and many people protest against it on a global level, so what is the difference between disliking violence on the one hand but doing nothing when it is directly in front of you?

I agree that a slap infrequently can enforce the idea of right and wrong and can enforce obedience, but in this country unfortunately, we have a very high child abuse rate. As a result there have been alot of prevention programs and education for children about abuse. This has caused two things to happen: one, that parents are afraid to discipline their children and two, that if they do so physically they can be arrested. How bad is the abuse rate in France? Is the issue as talked about there as here, or is the issue taboo? Do children learn about abuse in school or is it more of a social awareness?

Violence is a huge problem in some households in the U.S. where a father or mother may have some sort of emotional problem or poblems with alchohol. This just breeds resentment in the abused and creates a never-ending cycle of violence. There is a difference between this and parents who give their children a spanking when they've done something the parents consider very wrong. I remember this was the case with my family and I have harbored no resentment for my parents (partly because it didn't hurt that much anyways.) It's another thing of course if a parent uses a belt or something that really can hurt and traumatize a child.

I get the feeling from your comments and from the responses that physical discipline is very common in France. In the US it actually very common to find household where no corporal punishment is used. What fractions of households do these two styles of discipline represent in France?

I curious to know, based on how your parents disciplined you, how you plan to punish your children. Do you think that you will use force? Often? Occasionally? Never? And is there any fear that physical punishment instills certain ideas of conflict resolution in the malleable mind of a child?

I think that while a child is still young and may not be able to fully understand if you try to explain what he has done wrong, it is still good to try. I would never use violence against a child, but I think it is important to be firm. This way, you can establish your authority without hurting the child physically. I am not really sure of the best way to raise and educate a child though. I think that violence builds unnecessary resentment towards the parents though, that will only get in the way. I wouldn't want to spoil the child though.

Do most French citizens plan on having children? The majority of Americans plan on having children, but I'm not sure I want to have kids. Would this decision be regarded as strange?

I grew up in a home where force was never used as punishment. I also think that force teaches a child that violence is power, that violence is how to deal with problems. (I'm quite certain that President Bush was hit as a child.) For those reasons, I don't think I will ever use force with children.

Why is it that both sides responded so consistently that they would not even say anything to the mother? It seems that there are at least some French that do not condone the behavior. Someone once told me that all parenting is done in public. In France, is parenting a very private matter, never to be interfered with?

Merci,

François.
