Stanger in the street

Inconnu dans la rue

I smile back.
I would avert my eyes and focus my attention on a point straight in front of me.
I would greet him and wait to see if he says something.
I would not assume that they were going to bother me, but at the same time I would be slightly cautious.
I would smile back and remember her face.
I would smile back unless I found him thoroughly unattractive.
I would smile back with a big smile while continuing to walk along.
I would smile back, especially if I was attracted to them
I would smile back.
I would smile back.
I would smile back. She probably totally digs me.
I would smile in return and keep walking.
I would wait to see what they did next.
If he doesn't have a good reason for talking to me, then he's sketchy and I'm leaving
Look away and keep walking.
Smile back and say hello.

Discussion

Although most students from both groups responded that they would smile back to a stranger on the street if he/she approached with a big smile, it seems that the French students would be more direct or confrontational as a response. For instance, one response was "Je lui demande: "Est-ce que tu baises"" and another was "Je lui demande ce qu'il veut." Based on these responses and similar ones, one can infer that communication between strangers in this situation is more verbal for the French and based on body language for Americans. I know this is very much a generalization, but did this theme stand out for anyone else?

Similar to some other situations, like the fridge, the movie theater and the smoker, I agree with Belinda that the American responses are more passive and indifferent than those of the French. In general, the French students were more curious about the stranger's motive and reacted assertively, feeling less skeptical than the Americans. Perhaps Americans choose to shy away from confrontation because we're raised to be more cautious than the French when interacting with strangers? Is it just a matter of difference in communication?
Also, what is meant by Dianetique?

Dianetics are the ideas and "religious" practices developed by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. "Dianetique," therefore, probably refers to the followers of Scientology.

The Americain responses, which mostly consist of "I would smile back," are a lot shorter the the French, which try harder to understand what the stranger is upto. I think that the simplicity and almost automatic response of an American to smile back shows that it is not an uncommon for a stranger with whom you cross paths to smile at you and for you to smile back.

I noticed that the responses were either suspicious or brazen, and in class we were wondering if this had anything to do with the gender of the respondents. I'm curious as to whether your class is mostly male or female.
