lecteurs/lectrices bonjour. on a à peu près tous la même notion d'impolitesse des 2 cotés de l'océan.En effet,on peut dégager clairement l'idéé de disrespect ou de manque de respect envers autrui,hein,c'est vrai que c'est impoli de se comporter comme ça...ça va avec mais c'est pas tout à fait la même chose, quelqu'un qui ne pense qu'à soi et pas aux autres est une personne impolie,soit,mais je pense que ça revient au même que de manquer de respect à son entourage,si on y réfléchit un tant soit peu. I would like to say that there are a lot of similarities between the French and American views of an impolite/rude person. But, I have a question: Do you think that someone being impolite and someone being rude are the same thing? Here, someone that is impolite may lack manners in one aspect but if they are rude, they have no regard for anything. Is that true of the french also? I saw that a lot of the French responses fell under the impolite category rather than downright rude. What do you think?
I'm not sure if there is any real difference between the words 'impolite' and 'rude'. 'Impolite' is a polite way of saying 'rude'. However, the French responses did focus on respect more than the Americans. Do you define selfishness as a lack of respect for others or are they two different things? Americans seem to equate a selfish person with a rude person. American students also objected to those who said rude things. Does this form of rudeness bother the French? Etienne, at any rate, has advised us to talk back to these people.
I must also comment that there are many similarities between the two countries on this idea. But I also noticed that the French students seem to relate an impolite person to more the idea of "égoïste." Why is that? One of my classmates commented during class on the idea that perhaps Americans are more opened to idea that a person can be an egotist. What do y'all think??
The observation I made that no one has mentioned above is that an impolite person is more associated with impolite speech on the American side than on the French side. I think you have to be very careful about what you say to a person in the US. May be the French are more tolerant to people who voice their opinions directly and are more outspoken without concern for how others may perceive it. What do you think?
I think that for Americans, being impolite means offending people personally. For example: hurting people, insulting them, bumping them out of the way, etc. These are things that are done to individuals. On the other hand, the French mentioned a lot about a person that does not care for the others. It seems more applied to the general public, a group of people, than targeted towards individuals.

Juste une remarque sur la question de la différence entre "impolie et rude",en fait il y a peut-être eut une différence dans les réponses à cause d'un problème de traduction: rude a été traduit par impolie en français, alors qu'il semble y avoir une petite différence entre rude et impolite en Américain!En France on dit souvent "Traduire c'est trahir", qu'en pensez-vous?
