Quand j'ai lu les résultats de ce thème, l'élément qui m'a choqué en premier est de lire qu'un Américain a répondu que ce que les Etats-Unis avaient le plus besoin était un" dirigeant puissant, pas Obama."

J'aimerais savoir si vous, les étudiants du MIT, pensez majoritairement comme celui qui répondu ces mots ?

Autrement dit, n'avez-vous pas confiance dans les capacités d'Obama pour répondre aux besoins des Américains ?

I can't speak for all of MIT, but there are two reasons why I believe someone would think that: a) a lot of Obama's Republican critics believe him (like most Democrats) to be weak on national security and defense, or b) a number of Democrats are growing frustrated at Obama's priority of compromising with Republicans over passing effective legislation (e.g. financial stimulus, healthcare reform).

What is France's (or Europe's) opinion of Obama as a leader?

Both the french and americain responses were quite interesting here.  An overwhelming majority of the french responses were political in nature.  Do the french students share in the disappointment with the government?  What are some of the problems associated with government that led to responses like these?

Jusqu'ici, je voyais Obama comme un Président a l'idéologie nouvelle et morderne. Je veux dire par là qu'il a prévu de mettre en place un système de sécurité sociale et de santé un peu comme en France ( Système qui est controversé en France, cela dit ). Au tout début de son mandat, il me semble qu'il avait même renvoyé un ministre parce que ce dernier ne payait pas d'impôts.

Je pense donc qu'Obama a un certains de principes, valeurs, objectifs auxquels il tient pour répondre aux attentes des Américains et je pensais qu'il était perçu par la majorité comme tel. Lors de son elections, nous avions vu dans les médias français des images de nombreux américains qui fêtaient cette election.

Je pense que les Français ont une moins mauvaise opinion du Gouvernement que les Américains. Je trouve que le pouvoir du gouvernement en France est étroitement surveillé par des institutions qui représentent le peuple ( Assemblée Nationale, Sénat ) ce qui fait qu'il ne peut pas faire n'importe quoi sous peine d'être montré du doigt et critiqué.

Maxime, with respect to president Obama, I think that international news have quieted down about out president.  The statistics show that his approval rating right after his election was very high, and has gone down significantly since then.  In fact, now there are slightly more people who "strongly disapprove" of Obama than people who "strongly approve" of him.

What happens is that many people get excited with presidential campaigns and the election, but once the president has been elected, the state of the country is often what people use for the president's approval ratings.  Obama has a lot of work to do to help improve Americans' lives, but it is a slow process, so in the meantime, people who previously approved of him get impatient and start losing confidence in him.

As to trusting Obama's capability to respond to America's needs, some have always believed that his plans sounded "too good to be true."  Throughout the election, his proposed solutions to pressing issues and predicted a net benefit for all, and while many were taken in by his words, by his charismatic "Yes we can," other questioned the feasibility of these solutions.  Mainly, these plans require vast ammounts of money, and in the midst of the financial crisis,  it seemed unlikely that Obama would be able to fund all that he wanted to carry out.  As Obama completes his first year as president, I imagine many have been dissapointed because they expected change, and have not seen much.  

Also, as to the French responses, I wonder why some of your classmated said that the French most need "une politique plus sociale."  Isn't the French political system socialist already?  

There seems to be a lot of variety in what the French students think the US needs.  Some said money, others modesty, others a new president.  I think all of this reflects the fact that even though the US has been supposedly moving in a new direction (helping the economy, ending the war), no successes have been demonstrated yet.  Obama is very popular in both the US and France, but there seems to be doubt about whether he can accomplish all that is expected.

Notre système est réputé social en effet mais nous voyons de plus en plus que l'argent reste la priorité de ce sytème.

Lorsque la crise économique est tombée, la France, comme les USA, ont déboursé des millards pour sauver les banques d'une fin inéluctable.

Les pays de l'ONU ont reussi a réunir 30 millions de dollars pour la fin dans le monde, tous pays confondu.

Je pense ne pas avoir besoin de vous faire un dessin.

C'est une question intéressante que tu soulèves car lorsque les éléctions avaient lieu dans votre pays. En France, c'était souvent un sujet de conversation et la majorité des gens avec qui j'ai pu en discuter préfèrait voir un président moderne avec des valeurs et des principes nouveaux.

Nous pensions que beaucoup d'Américains voulaient eux-aussi un nouveau départ pour leur pays.
