A good student is someone ...

Un bon étudiant est quelqu'un ...

doing homework.

that works diligently at all times.

who does all the homework, who is genuinely interested in the material, who is self-motivated

who is always prepared (without necessarily being creative).

who is respectful, thorough, attentive, and thoughtful about their work.

who is responsible and hard-working.

who learns the required material; who studies when studying is required; who doesn't let their classes consume their life.

who makes an effort!

who seeks to listen and understand.

who studies frequently and can apply the concepts they learn to practical applications.

who tries hard in school.

who tries their best to learn.

who works hard at the material and asks questions when confused.

who works hard, helps others, completes assignments on time and accurately, remembers the things he/she learns.

who works to the best of their ability to learn and understand concepts.

sait s'organiser

sociable, travailleur, curieux

travaille, travaille, travaille

Discussion

While both groups discussed the idea of hard work, I found it interesting that only the French side mentioned anything about also being social and thinking about the future. I know Americans find these things important also, but don't necessarily relate them to being a good student. Would it be correct to guess that the French connect being a student with one's entire set of goals at that point in their life?

Paelle:

The answers on the American side might also reflect the particular culture of MIT more than American culture in general.  I've found that some students here are so completely absorbed in their studies that they can't really step back enough to look ahead into the future.

To me, the two sets of responses seem similar, at least on the surface. As before, when it comes to the teaching/learning process, the American responses seem to be more immediately related to that process per se. On the other hand, the French responses tend to bear an expectation for the future and to make connections with the world outside their studies: the social medium. Kudos on "sociable" and "curieux" ;-)

Fanny,

Homework, especially at MIT, is essential for stuents to understand and apply topics discussed in class. In my opinion, doing homework reflects a student's devotion to the class or interest in a particular subject. Of course, it's not necessary for all students to do work outside of school, but at MIT, homework usually counts for 10-20% of a student's final grade.

Yes, that does happen, sometimes students are not prepared and that can lead to them not being able to participate in class discussions. I have heard that in some schools the professor might even ask the student to leave the class if he is not prepared (I don't think this happens at MIT very often, does this happen in your school?). However, I think it is more because they were so busy with other work that they had no time to do the work for another class and not because they were just lazy. This does happen sometimes, it has already happened to me before. We have so much work every week that if one doesnt manage their time well it can be very stressful.

Michele,

At MIT, I think there are less of those people than other schools because most students here are very driven or, alternatively, they are very interested in the classes they're taking. So they usually do their psets. However, there are cases, like Arturo mentioned, in which people are just too busy to do their homework and opt to take a zero for a specific pset. It doesn't occur very often though.

Psets are also called problem sets. They are our version of homework, usually about 5 difficult problems due once a week for each class.

Claire,

The answer to your question varies by year. Here is a link to a graph of 2006-2009 MIT graduates. http://web.mit.edu/fnl/volume/223/hastings1_POP.html

And a quick article regarding what you mentioned: http://web.mit.edu/fnl/volume/223/hastings.html

Jobs aren't exactly handed out to MIT students on the basis of being MIT students, but part of the allure of attending MIT and doing homework every night is exactly what you mention...we are offered more opportunities to succeed, and on the basis of building habits, we learn how to take advantage of these opportunities through a dedicated work ethic.

Fanny,

Each so-called PSET takes an average of five-six hours, if you know what you are doing and are comfortable with the material. The length of the pset varies by class and by week, even. I think a good estimate, is that most students take two classes in which the majority of the learning is via psets. And another two courses that are not pset-intensive.

Another good estimate, I think, is an average of three-four hours of class per day.
