You are sitting at a table in the non-smoking section ofy
our favorite bar/café/restaurant, and someone sitting at the next
table lights up a cigarette.

cigarette.

ask for
a cigarette, or I ignore it.

Ask him
to move outside.

disgust

Extreme
annoyance, an urge to tell him/her not to smoke.

I ask
the host to do something about this.

I ask
them to stop smoking.

I
assume they don't know it's a non-smoking section. If I see
available room in the smoking section, I ask them if s/he would
mind to change tables

i don't
care

I don't
mind.

I let
him/her pay attention.

i tell
the maitre d

I tell
them that it is not a smoking section.

I would
ask the person not to smoke, or to go sit in the smoking section.

I would
ask them to put it out or move.

I would
ask them to put it out.

I would
feel ill and ask to move to a different table, or maybe I would
ask them to put it out.

I would
move tables.

I would
not care, but if I were with someone who did, I would tell that
person to put it out

I would
remind that person that this is non-smoking area.

I would
tell them that this is a non-smoking section.

I would
think that he was rude.

i would
warn that person to quit his cigarette, because i feel bad in
cigarette smoke

I'd ask
him to stop

I'd
cough loudly & ask the waiter to have them put out their
cigarette.

I'd get
really mad and ask them to put out their filthy cigarette.

If it
really bothered me I would kindly ask the person to put it out or
move to another table farther away from me.

It
would not bother me normally, but if it did, I will request her
to stop.

it's a
bit annoying but i'll have to put up with it

Should
I ask him/her to stop it, or just call the waitress?

Would
be angry because I hate being near someone who is smoking. Would
probably talk to the waiter about the other customer.

You ask the person to stop
smoking

"Excusez-moi, la fumée
me gêne!"

d'éteindre sa cigarette,laquelle me gêne

je lui fais remarquer qu'on
est en zone non-fumeur

Je lui fais remarquer que
la fumée me dérange

je lui fais remarquer que
ça me gêne

je lui fait remarquer que
la salle fumeur est à côté

je lui prie d'éteindre
sa cigarette ou de changer d'endroit

je lui signale qu'il est
dans une zone non fumeur

je m'assois dans la section
fumeur. hé hé

je me mets à tousser
fortement

Maybe the American reactions would be different in another part of the United States. People in Boston do not seem to care too much about other people smoking, but in California, where I grew up, and where everyone is healthy and fit, smoking in almost any public area is not seen in a positive light. It's even against Californian law to smoke in restaurants, etc. Do you guys have any laws like this?

There aren't any states in the US where you can't smoke at all, but there are definitely states where you can't smoke at all inside.

I was surprised by these results since there seems to be the stereotype here that the French smoke much more than Americans, yet the results of the survey were pretty similar. Do many people, in fact, smoke in France, or is it really just a false stereotype?

Salut !

Hello! What I found most stricking about the answers in the American side was that many expressed they would tell the waiter/ress instead of asking the person who lighted the cigarette directly. I was surprised too (well, maybe not surprised, but I found it kind of sad) that so few people assumed that the smoker did not know s/he was in a non-smoking area. Most students seemed to assume that the person was just being rude and irrespectful. Maybe this is more justified in the French side if what Marek said about it being common for people not to respect the different areas is true. It seems to me that if you call the waiter in this situation it means that you are more worried about the by-law than the smoke itself.

In my years in the States (I am from LatinAmerica)I have seen an increasing fanatism agianst smoking. What I mean with this (of course I agree that smoking is not good for the health and might be bothering to others in poorly ventilated or small areas -there are really no serious big studies about how bad it is for second-hand smokers to share bars and restaurant where there is cigarrette smoke) is that is seems quite a contradiction to be worried so much about second-hand smoking at the same time that use of cars is so much promoted. California is the best example: smoking is completely forbiden in public areas -even in spaces sorrounding public buildings like universities-, bars and restaurants but it's the State that produces the most air pollution from cars in the world. There is also the contradiction that smoking and production of cigarretes is not forbidden (maybe they want the money?)

Sometimes, when I read an add against cigarrette smoking -some even quite offensive to smokers- I change 'smoking' for 'driving' and the like; usually the effect is quite interesting and informative about trends in society...

"there are really no serious big studies about how bad it is for second-hand smokers to share bars and restaurant where there is cigarrette smoke"
I'm not so sure about this. Second-hand smoke causes lung cancer as well, last time I checked.

Plus, many people have increased sensitivity or even an allergy to cigarette smoke. It is not only very annoying for them to smell smoke, but it makes it very hard for them to breathe.

I think the main reason smoking ads can be offensive to smokers is because non-smokers simply find smoking offensive. Smoking is something that directly affects everyone around the smoker and that's why so many non-smokers speak out against it. Of course they are concerned about the smoker's health too, but the fact that so many other people have to experience the ill effects of it is what pushes them over the edge & makes them say something.

Marek, you say that 30% of high schoolers smoke in France? How big an increase (or decrease) is this from five or ten years ago? And why is it becoming so popular for young people to smoke in France even as the government wages a public relations campaign against smoking?

How would you say the percentage of smokers at INT compares to that of the rest of the country (for the same age group)? It has been my experience (and I invite the other MIT students to comment if theirs has been different) that few MIT students smoke compared to non MIT students.

Caroline,

What type of health education do French students typically receive? Also, is it common for athletes to smoke when they are young?
