Discussion

1- I'm from France, more exactly from Toulouse, a city of more than 400 000 inhabitants in the South of France where the weather is really more sunny than in Paris!
3- I think I went to a "classe préparatoire"? because I was a good student in the secondary school, and also because my parents did the same and told me it was a good choice. Moreover, I wasn't really interested in something in particular, and it was a way to postpone my choice.
Then it is almost the same for everybody : once you are in a "classe préparatoire"? you do the best you can to integrate the school everybody considers as the best. I worked hard for it because I thought it was the best I had to do to be sure to have a good future and also because I really wanted my family to be proud of me. I do not regret it.

A spanish philosopher, Jose Ortega y Gasset, said : "I am myself and my circumstance". I think that all the different situations that I have lived through have determined my personality. My name is Jorge Bravo, I’m chilean (not very spicy) I love new challenges and think that life is a good oportunity to live different experiences and to open my mind to encounter other cultures.

In 2017 I would like to be married to the woman of my dreams.

I come from Shanghai, China. Sixteen months ago I came to France. My greatest hobby is reading, especially literature. I am also interested in watching movies. Since I like mathematics very much, and Ecole Polytechnique is one of the best schools for mathematics in the world, I chose to study more mathematics here. I would like to become a teacher in applied mathematics in 2017.

Bonjour,

Je me appelle Paul.

My family still lives in Venezuela and I only came to the United States for college four and a half years ago. I completed my high school (bachillerato as we call it back home) in Caracas as well. I enjoy playing soccer and reading (I tend to prefer the old masterpieces over more recent literature, and narrative and essays over poetry and plays).

I decided to come to MIT because of its worldwide prestige in the sciences and engineering and particularly because there was an excellent fit between the type of research going on here and my scientific interests.

I look forward to working with you all this semester.

Regards - Bien cordialement.
Paul Monasterio

Bonjour!
Here is one reason why I chose to go to Polytechnique: I wanted to earn enough money to feel free to do whatever I wanted, to be independent. Of course I do like Maths and Physics, I'm not masochistic! I also want to be an engineer!
Here is my life as I would like it to be in 2017:

My secondary education has been in the United States. I am a freshman, currently taking studio, physics, biology, and French. I plan to major in architecture and in the future (in 10 years), I plan to become an architect. I chose to study at MIT because of the excellent architecture program, the research opportunities, and the humanities programs. Currently, I participate in crew, have a research project, and do photography. My other interests include robotics and recently I competed in an autonomous robot competition.

Bonjour! I plan to major in biology (possibly eventually going on to medical school), and this semester I am taking biology, French, physics (electricity and magnetism), and organic chemistry. I chose to come to MIT because of its fine academic reputation and thus the numerous opportunities it has to offer. Outside of my academic interests, I enjoy skiing, singing, watching movies, and spending time with my friends. In ten years I hope to find myself successful and happy with a secure job and a loving family.

Bonjour! This semester I am taking several economics classes, physics, chemistry, and of course mon classe de français! In addition to school I enjoy archery, yoga, art history and traveling. I also enjoy cool weather, but boston is far too cold for my tastes!

Hello, my name is Mikhail. I am a foreign student at Ecole Polytechnique. I have been living in France for about a year and a half. I studied in Moscow before. So, I am Russian. Why did I come to France? Not so easy to answer, in fact. Principally there are two reasons. The first one is about my career. Even in Russia it is easier to get a good job with a second diploma, obtained in Europe, with two foreign languages and with an experience of working abroad. The second reason is personal. France always seemed to me as a dream-land inhabited by intelligent and subtle people. The reality turned out to be more complicated…
Why did I choose Ecole Polytechnique? After I had chosen the country, the choice of a school did not seem to be difficult. France is still a very centralized country, so for the financial mathematics, the domain I am interested in, there are few good schools. I chose the most well-known in Russia. In addition, it was the only French school organizing entrance examinations in Moscow.

I am a freshman and I plan to major in chemical engineering with a biological focus. My older sister is a sophomore and she also goes to MIT. Boston is an amazing city to live in and I really enjoy the "big city life."? My parents are originally from India and we go visit our relatives there every couple of years. I love traveling and hope to visit Europe one day- especially France!

Bonjour! I plan to study biomedical engineering and pre-medicine. I come from a very small town so I love living in Boston and being able to take advantage of everything that the city has to offer. I especially love the Aquarium which has penguins, my favorite animal!

I come from Spain. I was born in Madrid but I have lived all my life in Guadalajara. I have been in France for eight months but I started learning French twelve years ago. I could describe myself as a person of initiative and creativity. I enjoy helping people, working with children and with families. I love doing sport, such as fencing, bike, mountaineering and badminton and I am involved as a volunteer in an association devoted to organizing many sport events.

Bonjour! My name is Kaitlyn and I'm 19 years-old. I'm an American born in a town just North of Philadelphia. I'm am now a sophomore in mechanical engineering at MIT. I choose to come to MIT because I was impressed by the passionate student and faculty community. My project for one of the classes that I am taking this semester will be to build a robot. At the end of the semester I will have to compete with my robot against my classmates.

I decided to come to MIT because it has excellent programs in engineering and business. Adjusting to life in Boston was at first very difficult for me: the winters in Boston are quite frigid and windy! Outside of school, I enjoy running, snowboarding, investing, and listening to classic rock. Before starting work full-time, I would like to take a few months off and perhaps travel through Europe. In the future, I could see myself living in a number of countries, but would like to return to the west coast of the U.S. eventually.

Hi! I’ve lived in Saugerties, a small town in Upstate New York, for all of my life. I chose MIT because it is one of the best universities close to my home. In ten years, I hope I’ll be enjoying a career in research.

Bonjour! 7 years ago I moved to Los Angeles, California. This semester I’m taking math (differential equations), physics (electricity and magnetism), French, and a few seminars, one of them in plasma physics and nuclear fusion. I chose MIT because of its importance in the scientific realm and the opportunities available here. My extracurricular activities include the Solar Decathlon (where we’re building a solar-powered house), reading, and exploring Boston.

I came to the US in 2003 to begin my undergraduate studies. In Greece I lived in a suburb of Athens. I went to high school there and when it was time to decide where to continue my education, I decided to follow the example of my brother, who also came to the US to study. I am very pleased with the decision I made as MIT has provided me with great opportunities so far. I am currently in my last semester here and since I am done with most of my requirements I have decided to take classes that I will never again have the opportunity to take, like Chinese. Before I return to Greece, which I eventually want to do, I would really enjoy the opportunity to work in the US and Europe for a few years.

I chose to come to MIT because it is one of the best schools in the world for my major, and because it has my favorite sport – softball. I have been playing since I was 7. I am captain of the school team this year. After university, I hope to go to medical school.

I am in my fourth year at MIT, where I am studying environmental engineering. I chose to attend MIT for its amazing opportunities for environmental engineering students. I have been able to travel all over the world for my studies, including South America and Europe. I am hoping to work in Paris this summer to practice my engineering skills and experience French culture.

Bonjour.

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and I recently came to the United States to continue my education. Je suis un élevé a MIT. I am a freshman and just began taking my first mechanical engineering class. I have had to privilege to visit many countries in both South America and Europe. I am still unsure about what I want to eventually do with my life, but for now I am contempt on trying out new experiences and enjoying my studies here.

I am currently taking several classes, including integrated chemical engineering, molecular and cellular biology, French III, and forms of western narrative. In my spare time, I enjoy dancing hip hop in MIT’s dancetroupe and organizing events for MIT’s chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. I also did drug delivery research for several years. I chose MIT because I was interested in having a solid technical education, pursing a career in the pharmaceutical industry, and having access to world-class laboratories. However, I have decided to segue into business. After I graduate in June 2007, I will work as a management consultant for McKinsey in Chicago. Hopefully, I will have an opportunity to work on international client cases and travel the world.

Hello. At MIT, I’ve already had a chance to do research under a neuroengineering professor, working on a laser to stimulate neurons. In fact the reason I came to MIT was for its great beginner hockey league…Actually I came for the rigorous mathematics and science focus, but the extracurricular scene, along with the school’s proximity to the fabulous city of Boston were key factors. Ten years from now I hope to have succeeded in inventing something and on my way to wealth that will allow me to be lazy for the rest of my life.

I come from a little village called Bouilly, which is in Champagne Ardennes, about 200 km east from Paris. It is a very small place, ex-centered from the nearest big town (Troyes). One should think that bread in that sort of village is very good, but actually it is not (though it must be a local anomaly) because the baker is the only one in a circle of 15 km, so people have to buy it there.

I love playing cards, programming, reading comics, sport (not on TV !) (volleyball, karate, table-tennis, running, tennis), conundrums, … But I also like tranquillity, laying on my bed, and staring at the ceiling. I do not really like music : in fact yes I do but I often prefer the sound of silence, or of the motion of air outside, and birds’ whisteling.

I imagine myself, in ten years, in a pretty apartment, very clean, modern (in contrast with the house made of wood where I live), in a big town such as New York or Paris, in a high tower, and my apartment would be equipped with everything that I lack during my studies : a very big TV with a plasma screen and a console game plugged, and a beautiful computer with many accessories (I would like to control everything from my computer : lights, TV ?, …). The rest of my home would be comfortable but sober. If I earn enough money, and if I have time to enjoy my apartment, I would probably be very happy. And why not a wife…

Hello every one ! I'm Alexis and I am 22. I have always lived in Paris which does not prevent me from travelling all over the world: for example to California, Great Britain, Grece, Italia, Czechoslovakia. I like meeting foreign students because I think it is the best way to discover a culture new culture. I chose to go to the Ecole Polytechnique because we learn several matters (Economics, computer science, Mathematics). Personnally, I'm very interested in financial mathematics. In the Ecole Polytechnique, we have also the possibility to manage associations (they are called the "binets") which provide a lot of human contacts and experiences, among students but also with different firms. For instance, as I like classical music, I belong to an association which helps students to go to classical concerts in Paris. In ten years, I want to remain as dynamic, curious and ambitious as I am today.

Hi, my name is Jimmy Mullaertand I'm 21 years old. I am very interested in Music (even modern or classical) because I have been studying the Piano since my childhood. I also like seeing my friends in the week-end or surf on the web. But I hate reading novels which gives me the feeling I'm wasting my time. The Ecole Polytechnique is for me a very good school, but it wasn't the goal of my life : I want to become a doctor.

For Kaitlyn Becker: Hi! Is there many girls who are interested in robotics there? It seems rather hard to me to built a robot with a box of materiels. Since I know almost nothing in robotics, I would like to know if it has anything to do with artificial intelligence?

Hi, my name is Jimmy Mullaertand I'm 21 years old. I am very interested in Music (even modern or classical) because I have been studying the Piano since my childhood. I also like seeing my friends in the week-end or surf on the web. But I hate reading novels which gives me the feeling I'm wasting my time. The Ecole Polytechnique is for me a very good school, but it wasn't the goal of my life : I want to become a doctor.

For Paul Monasterio: I am very glad that you like to read masterpieces in literature. Would you like to talk more about it?

J’ai vécu a Florida, New York, et Wisconsin seulement. So, I spent pretty much my entire life in Chicago before coming to MIT. I chose to come to MIT because I love the environment here : the people, the academics, and the activities. Now I’m here and I’ve chosen to major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Bonjour, je m'appelle Michelle. J'ai 19 ans. I am an American student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Je suis en ma première année. At the moment, I am studying architecture, but I am not sure if this is what I want to major in. I chose architecture last year because I'm interested in art and design. Je suis née à Saint Louis, Missouri. I've lived in five different states during my life, including Texas, Missouri, Georgia, Illinois, and Massachusetts. My favorite state is Texas. I chose MIT because I wanted to go to a school that would push me the most academically. Also, I wanted to go to a school that was as far away from my parents as I could get.

Bonjour! I grew up in Los Angeles, a city that seems overrun by superficial, self-obsessed people who have more money than they know what to do with. Needless to say, I was anxious to leave for Boston and MIT, the antithesis of all things L.A. The people here are incredibly down to earth and seem to know exactly what is important in life. Of course, as much as I love the people at MIT, its always hard to find the time away from the demands of the school to spend a significant amount of time with them. Still, as difficult and demanding as MIT is, I find it impossible not to love. I honestly could not tell you why. Maybe I love the pain…

Bonjour,
My name is Ashley Pinchinat. I am now 18 years old and a freshman at MIT. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Both my parents were born in Haiti. My father came to the United States when he was 18; my mom came to this country when she was 16. Both my parents speak English well but speak tend to speak creole at home.

For David Zarzoso: I'm not totally sure what I'll end up doing. Most likely I'll become a professor or a researcher of some sort, though I doubt it will be in nuclear engineering (alternatively I could decide that poverty is not the way to go and become an investment banker, who knows) . Even though I'm a nuclear engineering student currently my research is mostly in the area of computational materials science and condensed matter physics (it just so happens that the people who were working exactly in what I wanted are in the nuclear engineering department). However even though my research is not directly nuclear it has important applications for the nuclear industry: for example before hand while in Berkeley I used to work on the irradiation effects to materials which is about 90% materials science and 10% nuclear science, now I work on understanding corrosion which is once again 90% materials science and 10% nuclear engineering but has tremendous implications in advanced energy systems such as nuclear reactors.

In short, I'm more of a physicist/mathematician/materials scientist than a nuclear engineer (or any engineer for that matter) but the majority of the problems I'm interested on have substantial applications in the nuclear industry. Also since my research focus is more of a computational nature I have plenty of flexibility to tackle various problems in various fields in the future so I may do some directly nuclear work (such as neutron transport) some time in the future.

Best,
Paul

For Cheng Wan: Glad you asked! Well, as I mentioned I prefer older works of literature that have survived the test of time and will always be considered high quality books. Unfortunately lots of books these days do not satisfy that requirement and I tend to dislike them or even worse, they just stink but still become best-seller *cough* Dan Brown *cough*. In any case this is a short list of the type of books and authors I like, I'm sure you can tell some of my literary preferences from there: A hundred years of solitude (Gabriel Garcia Marquez), Hunger (Knut Hamsum), The Republic (Plato), The Idiot & Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoievsky), The Iliad (Homer), Fictions (Jorge Luis Borges).

What type of books do you like?

In response to a question posed by Thomas J.: extracurricular activities refers to activities on campus that are in addition to classwork. This includes clubs, sports, research, and many other things. The phrase "extracurricular scene" is an idiomatic manner of referring to the conglomerate of extracurricular activities available.

In response to Marie: Hello! Indeed, we seem to have many things in comon. I also like to cook, except now it seems like I no longer have time to make anything fancy. I also love languages - I started learning German this winter to add to my bank of languages.
I’m not sure that I want to stay in the US (I find that I like change and cannot stay in the same place for a very long time, so I really want to travel – mostly in Europe). Ideally, my job would allow me to travel a lot. Ukraine has been having many difficulties, both politically and economically, since the fall of the Soviet Union. Having a decent job in science there is pretty difficult, because science as a whole is grossly underfunded. Of course, that may be a good reason to come back (to try to change the situation), but that is a very difficult task. Despite all of this, I love Ukraine and still consider it my home, and I try to keep up with the current events there. In fact, I’m going back there this summer (for the first time in 7 years!), so I will see how much things changed while I was away. I ended up staying in the US almost by accident – we came to visit my aunt and some documents got lost, so we had to stay longer, and then I needed to go to school and eventually we stayed forever. It’s a very odd story, I know, but c’est la vie! I don’t think of myself as either American or Ukrainian anymore – I’m more of a conglomeration of experiences – a person without a country, as they say. I consider that a good thing, because I feel like I can look at a given situation from 2 different perspectives, and be more objective in general.
I like books that explore human nature, like works of Dostoyevsky, Sartre (Huis Clos is my favorite play), Camus, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Brecht, Gogol, Solzhenitsyn. My favorite book is Gormenghast, by Mervyn Peake.
If you’d like to learn more about the Solar Decathlon, the simplest way is to go to the website: www.solardecathlon.org We haven’t started building anything yet, but we will soon, so that should be interesting (and very time-consuming). I think that X could enter a team in the next competition, since there are teams from Canada, Germany, and Spain competing this year.
Hopefully you were not bored by my long answer. Which aspects of renewable energy are you interested in? And which books and movies do you like?

For Mikhail: Do you still think that France is a "dream-land inhabited by intelligent and subtle people" or has that been contradicted by your personal experiences? I know that when I was still in Ukraine my impression of America was much different than it is now.

For Helene Viatge: Hi! I am flattered that you think that I know exactly what I want. The truth is that it took me a long time to figure out what to do after graduation, which is occurring this spring. In the end I decided that I wanted a job that would give me a broad range of experiences from traveling the world to working with interesting people to expanding my skill set beyond mathematics and engineering. As a result, I chose management consulting. I had originally wanted to work in the pharmaceutical industry because I was interested in helping people and developing drugs; however, I didn’t like doing laboratory research everyday because it was too slow and not challenging. In regards to my German background, I am ashamed to say that I don’t speak German but I do love the culture. I am very excited because I am going to Karlsruhe, Germany for a month this summer with my boyfriend. Western narratives is a course that examines important pieces of literature (Iliad, Don Quixote, Les Liasions Dangereuses) that have a narrative quality or element of story telling. I love reading and this class is a nice break from my engineering courses. What is le commerce? Is it business or economics? It seems like you have some time to decide what you want to do. You have so many passions. I am sure that it is really difficult to pick something and maybe you won’t need to pick just one thing.

Pour Marie Pausader: I think that your career aspirations are very noble. I am a chemical engineer, and I am extremely interested in energy. I am currently in a class where I am designing a chemical plant that maximizes energy production from fossil fuels without the negative environmental impacts. We are also greatly interested in exploring and utilizing alternative energy sources. What form of renewable energy are you most interested in? Are you a proponent of nuclear energy or are you interested in other forms, like solar, wind and biomass?

Hi, my name is Judy Cheng. I am Chinese-American. I was born in New York and have lived there for my entire life. I am a sophomore at MIT and am majoring in biology. I chose to come to MIT because I loved to study science in high school. In addition, my sister was a student at Tufts University, which is very close to MIT. This semester, I am taking biochemistry, corporate accounting, microeconomics, and of course, French.

For Alexis Loublier: I think it's great that you love to travel and appreciate learning about other cultures. Do you have a favorite place you have been? I spent a summer in Italy two years ago and really enjoyed it; it was my first visit to Europe and was very eye-opening. I also imagine you're near the end of your education at the Ecole Polytechnique-- do you know what you want to do when you are finished?

For Paul Monasterio: What you read are really masterpieces! I have read some of them, like A Hundred Year of Solitude and I like it very much though I read it when I was in middle school so I didn't understand very well:-) As to the best-sellers like Dan Brown, I quite agree with you. But there is also some excellent works among the best-sellers. I prefer English literature (I am sorry that I haven't read much Latin American literature such as the magic realism, if it is the right name, because they are not easy to understand). When I was in high school I prefered Jane Austin etc but now I like very much the authors of the twentieth century, such as E.M.Forster, Evelyn Waugh, etc.

Viatge Helene-It's great to hear that you love architecture too! I'm actually taking studio, which is an architecture class-so far, it's been a blast. I enjoy getting involved in my community-I worked for Habitat for about a year every Saturday. What about you? Are you involved in any other community activities besides the public place project? I photograph buildings mostly-I do nature occasionally and portraits once in awhile. The reason that I ended up getting into photography was because of darkroom-I randomly took a class in it. What about you? Do you take photographs? Robots have kind of been my life for years-I don't know if you've heard of FIRST robotics, but I did that for 3 years and I've taken two classes here at MIT in it too. I read that you enjoy running. Are you on a team? What types of movies do you like? Do you have any idea where you want to go abroad for your career?

Marie Pausader-I read that you like photography. Do you like to take pictures of anything in particular?

For Cheng Wan: Are there any genres of films in particular that you prefer?

For Alexis: The Greek system has a lot of peculiarities indeed. It is true that the examinations to get into a Greek university are extremely hard and competitive. However, even though the level of most universities in Greece is really high (in terms of the curricula taught and the professors), there is a lack of discipline and organizational structure. To most students it takes many years to graduate (instead of the normal which is 4 or 5 years). There is also the problem, which you mentioned (if I understood you correctly), that many don't get to study on exactly what they want but rather what they managed to get through their grade from the entrance examinations.
I actually had decided to come to the US to study a few years earlier. My brother had done the same so it was a rather easy decision for me to make...
As for your other question, yes I do have an interest in finance. I am actually very satisfied with the finance courses at MIT. I would say that they are more mathematical and practical. It is also interesting that there are no undergraduate-level finance courses so I have to take courses with MBA students. Do you get to take many finance courses there? Let me know if you would like me to tell you anything more about that.

For Jorge Bravo: Hi Jorge! I grew up in a very small town about an hour north of New York City, so while I was able to go into the city a lot, I didn't actually live there. Here at MIT I can walk to restaurants, shopping, the movie theater, etc, whereas at home I would have to drive to all of those places. I would love to go to Chili! We have an aquarium in Boston that has penguins so I love going there. When I first arrived at MIT I was pretty nervous, but also really excited. I was suprised to find such a vibrant nightlife here. We have a lot of fraternities that host really fun parties on the weekends, and I actually just joined a sorority!

You said that you play tennis. Have you been to any of the Grand Slams? I was lucky enough to go to the US Open for the past few years and it was so much fun! Have you ever been to New York?

For Alexis Loublier: At the moment I am looking for some books to read. Next time I visit the library I'll take a look at the New York Trilogy. What other books do you recommend?

In response to Cheng Wan:

I think there are a fair amount of girls interested in robotics, but there are still more guys interested than girls In my year we have an almost equal amount of guys and girls, but the distributions within each major vary.

Everyone in my major, mechanical engineering, is required to build a robot for one of their classes. However, the focus of the class isn't really the programming of the robot or artificial intelligence. The students studying computer science and electrical engineering are more involved in that side of the process. In my class we're focusing on the design and mechanical aspect. We are given four motors to assemble that we can use for our robots and then we have to design mechanisms that can be controled using those motors. In the competition at the end of the smester we will have four switches that control the four motors and we will have to drive the robots by ourselves or with the help of one extra person.

One of the hardest parts about the class is that we are limited by the material we are given. This makes me nervous to start using material because I am afraid I will cut a piece of material incorectly and then not be able to reuse that piece. That being said, I am still very excited to build my robot.

For Jimmy Mullaert: I am studying engineering because it is something I like to do. In America, we go to Medical School after our four years at university. During University, we have to study something else because there is no undergraduate medical major. Most people study either biology or chemistry. I don't like either of those subjects well enough to major in them, so I chose engineering. I like the hands-on problem solving that I think will be very applicable as a surgeon. Now, I have a few questions. What are you studying at Polytechniqe? And what sort of doctor do you want to become? Also, why do you feel that reading novels is a waste of your time, and surfing the web is not?

Marie Pausader-so what is your architecture seminar about? Right now, I'm taking an architecture studio class and I was curious what your seminar is like in comparison to my class. Are you involved in other art-type projects?

It's good to hear from you! I do develop my own photographs (I do darkroom). I've also done pinhole and strobe, which are quite fun. I was curious-you mentioned that you are going to Australia. What does your training include? Do you tend to do a lot of traveling? Have you visited the US before? Habitat is indeed to build houses, but the way it works is that the family that receives the house must also help work on it and they still have to help pay for the house. Almost everyone on site is a volunteer and the group of people I worked with were really kind. I no longer work there since it was back at my home in NH, which is kind of nearby, but still far. Does your family live near where you have school? FIRST robotics is actually a high school program where you have 6 weeks to design, build, program, and wire a robot to compete in a competition. It's a team thing and I worked on mostly design and mechanical (machine shop) for 3 years. You have regional competitions and a national competition (there are a little less than 2000 teams total today-our team was part the group that was formed near the beginnning). It's really exciting-all the noise and the cheering. Last year, our team was 1st seeded after the qualifying rounds at regionals, but then we lost. I still do some things with robotics-a robotics seminar 1st semester and an autonomous robot competition over IAP. Maybe there will be a FIRST robotics team near you sometime-teams are starting to expand to outside of the United States. Do you know a lot about robotics? Do you do anything in your classes with robotics? I do play a sport-crew. Unfortunately, right now, I'm on crutches, so I haven't been able to row. I also have a UROP (research opportunity) which takes up quite a bit of my time. Do you have a job or something like that? Does your school have a lot of research opportunities? I was curious about KES-what current things are you working on for it? Have you done any interesting changes around your campus?

Marie Pausader-so what is your architecture seminar about? Right now, I'm taking an architecture studio class and I was curious what your seminar is like in comparison to my class. Are you involved in other art-type projects?

For Judy Ho: Hi! I guess that you are also a movie lover like me. Great! Since I love also literature, I prefer the films adapted from novels. I like also comedies and romantic stories but unfortunately most of them are quite stupid. Art films are often interesting and attractive horror films are really hard to find. As a great admirer of E.M.Forster, I adore the films made by James Ivory and Ismail Merchant, who have made a great deal of classics. Costume dramas are my favorites, like "Innocent Times" "Barry Lydon". Audrey Hepburn is my favorite actress. Those are not the only films and actors that I like, because I cannot think out or tell everything now. What kind of film do you like best? I would be very pleased to talk more about it with you.

Salut Renee!

For Helene-Pinhole is actually where you make your own camera with a cardboard box and you have a hole in the front with a piece of metal and a "pinhole" in it. Strobe is where you use a sound sensor to catch specific action shots, like a balloon popping or smashing a lightbulb for example. I was very intrigued to hear about what you do for KES. So have you done a lot of traveling? Seeing the coral reefs sounds like it will be exciting for you! So will you do any scuba diving?

There are darkrooms at MIT, but I haven't had much time as of late to develop photos in them. I actually went into Boston (which is right near Cambridge) one day and I had forgotten to bring a new set of batteries for my SLR camera! In the past, at my high school, we had a darkroom that I used. I enjoy black and white, but I also do infared. It's interesting to hear about what your professor for your seminar talks about-there really are so many buildings to look at! So you have started oil painting! What do you think of it so far? Have you done much other painting in the past?

The above post is for Marie Pausader (I pressed the add post button too fast).

For Marie: The Solar House competition takes about 2 years to prepare for. Last year, some students designed the house (and then our team disintegrated because people had lost interest for some reason - perhaps because the actual competition was so far away and it seemed like too much work). So now, we finally got a team together again and we're entering the construction phase, trying to put the house together as quickly as possible. The competition itself takes place in October of this year.

For Mikhail: I was initially disillusioned with America because my expectations were too unrealistically high. I think the educational system is better in Ukraine, since I knew more math in 5th grade than I did in the 9th in the US, but Ukrainian colleges are much worse, since everything is now driven by bribes and corruption.
I agree that doing research in the former USSR is not as much of a good thing as it is in the US or Western Europe. They say Russia has better theoretical physicists and the US has better researchers, because Russian physicists only get enough money to buy a pencil and paper. I think that that is, at least partially, true.
As for contemporary Russian authors, I used to read a lot of war-related books (like Kuznetsov's "Babiy Yar" and also Solzhenitsyn, who apparently did not like Limonov very much). I've heard of Limonov because he grew up in my home city Kharkov, but I haven't read any of his works yet - thanks for the suggestion! I remember a book (published in 2000) that particularly struck me - it was about the wife of a "New Russian." I can't remember the name, but it managed to be cynical, poignant, and hilarious at the same time.
Meanwhile, I've been reading books in French to kill two birds with one stone.

Pinhole is very hard since there is no ability to "meter" etc. as you do on a regular camera. I have not gone diving ever so it seems like it'll be a new experience! Do you know much about it? Do you know what specific gear you have to wear? Over the summer, I'm going to be interning at the City Hall Building Department where I live, which is a job I've had for a little while and really enjoy. I'll be working on this project to do with a historical bell in our city. It's actually a project I'm really excited to be working on! I have three more years after this year (I'm only a freshman) and then perhaps grad school. How about you? How many more years do you have? I might travel abroad sometime in the four years, or I hope to. I plan on becoming an architect at the end of my schooling. What about you? Do you have any idea yet?

For Helene: Hi again, sorry about not answering sooner. My major chemical engineering has a lot of requirements. We spend three years on course work and our senior year is spent doing various industrial modules. We have three month modules where we have a real chemical engineering problem to solve using computer simulations. Our first project was on optimizing the production process of plastic and reducing its production costs. Our second project was focused on designing our own medical device systems. Currently, I am working on a really interesting project where my group is designing a carbon dioxide capture system for coal-fired power plants. The energy in the U.S., unlike France, is primarily derived from coal; however, greenhouse gas emission is detrimental to the environment. Consequently, the purpose of our project is to reduce carbon dioxide emission by trapping it. I think it is really interesting because it is a really important issue right now. Your visit to Australia sounds amazing. In the U.S. we have summer internships where we have an opportunity to work in industry or as you said, "at the bottom of the scale."? I have worked in a pharmaceutical company and a business consulting company. Both experiences were amazing. I have always wanted to work abroad but my internships have been limited to the U.S. Hopefully, I will get to go to Paris during Spring break. Did you know that two students from the U.S. are visiting the Polytechnique? Management consulting is a financially rewarding career if you are very good because it is bonus based. I would like to work on all kinds of cases: retail, pharmaceutical, energy, food. After watching the movie, "Devil Wear Prada"? I would love to work in the fashion sector for a short time. One of the advantages of working in consulting is that your projects only last three months so you have exposure to many different fields. I'm sorry that this message is so long. Oh, I wanted to ask you what kind of dancing you do. I danced ballet for 11 years but lately I have been dancing a lot of hip hop.

renee:

Marie Pausader-It's also nice to see that you enjoy painting! I must say that painting is not my speciality, but I know it is very difficult but fun. What other activities do you do in your spare time? I would also be interested to hear about the courses you are taking!

Mikhail: I think that in the US, many people also don't know why they are educating themselves. It's more of an obligation then a means of achieving a given goal, partly because the goals are rather vague, for example, "to have a family" (which doesn't require much schooling anyway), or "to get a stable job." It seems that in general, unless you know what it is you need to learn, it's difficult to understand the applicability of any given class (this is especially true with math for most people). I also think it has to do with parents and teachers - most parents tell their kids to "study hard so they can get a good job," but that's about it for details. What constitutes a "good job" is rather ambiguous for the child, and so the parent's encouragement probably evokes little significant thought.
Speaking of books, did you ever read Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita"? I loved the beginning but the end was a bit too happy. In general, I prefer more realistic endings, for instance that of "Anna Karenina" (not to say that everyone commits suicide), but at least that one made me think for a couple of days.

(beaucoup moins fun!)

Marie: How many classes are you taking - it seems like a lot. The american system seems to favor focus over breadth, so most of us take about 4-5 classes. In school, the norm is about six. But I know in other countries the number is very different, for example, in Ukraine in 5th grade I had 12 classes (maybe more, I can't remember all of them).

Marie-It is interesting to hear what classes you are taking! And I do agree that it seems like a lot compared to the number we have. You say that you're interested in bonsai. What does that entail?

Marie-I was curious about the 3 courses of sport per week. What sports are included in that? How many hours does it end up totaling to?

Renee:

Jorge: It's interesting to hear about what choices you have for sports. Here at MIT, we are required to do 8 points of physical education (you get 4 per season for a varsity sport, 2 for taking a quarterly class that meets twice a week). I've been on novice lightweight crew (rowing) until recently, when I was on crutches (I'm still in physical therapy but walking which is positive). Which physical education choice have you decided to do at Polytechnique?

Jorge: So you will stay with volleyball for all of the years? That's interesting! Do you do any other extracurricular or outside activities or projects?

Jorge: I hope you get to visit New York sometime soon. You should go at the end of August that way you could also go to the US Open! Who is your favorite player? I know Fernando Gonzalez is from Chile. He's quite good! Does your family live in Chile? When did you move? I would love to go to Chile one day. It sounds so beautiful!

Hello, I'm new here.
Je m'appelle Jong, j'ai 22 ans.

I'm from... Brazil, I guess.
I was born in South Korea, and I went to Brazil in 1998, and I lived there before I came here, to France, 13 months ago.

(I'm just kidding)

And what will I be doing in 2017...?
O_O ... I don't know... I think I came to France to discover what I will do in the future, but I didn't find the answer yet.
But I think I'll be just OK.
