Discussion

Jorge: I agree with your comment that Americans tend to be more interested in qualities of a president rather than a president that represents what it is to be American. Obviously the president must be born in the U.S., but after that it is more important what the president can do in terms of skills and abilities. Maybe this is because Americans have less of a national cultural identity than the French.

Something that always comes up during election time, is how well candidates "connect" with the average American and many times this is actually a bigger factor in people's minds than whether the candidates have the right qualifications and background. I remember reading an article during the last presidential election about how people didn't like the fact that John Kerry was very intellectual, knew different languages etc, because it made him seem "above" the average American. Personally, I would rather have a President who is smarter than the average person to lead the country, but I'm curious as to what the French value as most important in a candidate.

It seems that for this particular phrase, a lot of the responses were similar. They seemed to involve attributes such as intelligence, honesty, and understanding of the citizens on both sides. Something that I found interesting, however, was that one response on the American side included lowering taxes. It seems that almost everything that Americans respond to will include money in some way while the French never really seem to include such a thing. The French, on the other hand, thought a president should be visionary, looking to the future, but the American side didn't include anything like it. I found it really amusing though that both sides had something along the lines of "not like Bush."

I was curious as to your thoughts on the candidates for the elections in France. Do you favor one of the candidates over another one?

Jorge-
In the United States, there will be an election coming up in 2008. George W. Bush can't serve another term, so that means that there will be a new president. In 2006, the Democrats did gain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, which was quite a big deal. In my opinion, I think that with the amount of scandals, not just the Iraq war, but also in general, that the Democrats have a good chance of winning during the presidential election as well. I think that a lot of people are hoping for change. In the Democratic party, there are Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama as two of the candidates, each who, if one of them did win, would make history. It would be interesting to have a woman president, but in my opinion, I think that Barak Obama is the better candidate. I guess that it will first come down to who wins the primaries and then who is chosen. Where do you originally come from and is there any kind of similar election coming up? If so, who are the candidates that you prefer?

Jorge: In response to your question about what it is to be "American,"? I would say that the idea of equality of opportunity is central to Americans' identity. Although our country is quite diverse, equality of opportunity"”the American Dream"” is a pretty universal belief among Americans. This is the idea that anyone, regardless of their background or socioeconomic position, can achieve (economic) success if they work hard. Candidates that come from poor or lower middle class backgrounds are looked upon favorably in presidential elections because they exemplify the American dream in practice. To be a president in the US, one must be born on American soil (from US Constitution). Is this the same in France? How do the French feel about equality of opportunity? I got the impression that the French dislike economic inequality, but Americans seem to be more comfortable with inequality, as long as it is based upon differences in merit.

Helene-In answer to your question, there are probably other women candidates, but in terms of the ones that are probably the most visible and have the most possibility of winning the primaries, that would probably be Hilary Clinton. I guess it would be nice to see a woman elected, but I'm not so sure if that is going to happen-it will depend how much of a change Americans want. Even if Barak Obama got elected, that would also be a big change. So what are your opinions on the upcoming election in France? Is there one of the candidates that you like?

Jorge-Your comment about President Clinton brings up, I suppose, another interesting question. Do you normally look at the personal life (or what the media shows of it) when considering whether a candidate is good or not? Does that in any way influence your decision?
