elodie

I think for a lot of us getting into MIT was a very significant event in our lives because we worked really hard to get here, and we feel getting in is a great achievement. Personally, I wanted to come to school here since I was little, and since MIT is one of the hardest schools to get into in the U.S., the day I got my acceptance letter was one of the happiest days of my life. To describe MIT in three words I would say interesting, challenging, and busy.

As Elodie Marchal pointed out, we mentioned MIT very frequently, while none of the French students mentioned Lille3. On the other hand, many French students did mention obtaining their “bac” as well as their experiences in “lycée”, which very few of the American students mentioned. Perhaps it is the case that, while we view being accepted to MIT as a great achievement, many of the French students consider obtaining their “bac” to be a similar achievement, since one can receive a “bac” with various honors (“mention bien”, etc.). In France, do people take great pride if they receive a “bac” with honors? I would also like to add that, since many MIT students had to move far away from their families to attend MIT, I would imagine that this would increase the impact of attending college for us. In response to Elodie’s request for a three-word description of MIT, I would say science, knowledge and discovery.

In the United States getting into MIT is considered a great honor - probably comparable (more or less) to attending a grande ecole in France. Since it is one of the absolute hardest schools to get into, most students proably see it as the culmination of years of hard work and preparation, and therefore it is considered one of the most significant events in our lives.

I agree with what you all said. In response to Elodie's three-word request, I would describe MIT as: "technology, fascination, challenge". As Zachary pointed out, the French have talked a lot about "BAC", but we did not talk about "SAT" at all. The reason is that the SAT-s play a much less important role in the admission process at an American university than the BAC. Besides the SAT-s, an application consists of essays, letters of recommendation, forms, transcripts, etc. Are there any exams as important as the BAC at the end of university years in France?

Grades are usually determined by two or three exams during the semester, and a final exam which is weighted more heavily. A smaller percentage of our grades is usually also weekly homework, and class participation, but it depends on the class and the professor.

Peuvent-ils redoubler ?

Pauline, here is my opinion (let me know if I got the meaning of your question wrong, though :-) ). I think that failure is not that much of a problem here. Somebody can restart any step of their lives at any point: they can attend college or Ph.D even at 40 years old (I have had colleagues that were 40+ years). Furthermore, jobs and opportunities here are flexible so one can change to a better job if his/her qualifications improve. Thus, I believe that one cannot fail his/her life and always has the possibility of improving.

salut tout le monde
en réponse à zachary " In France, do people take great pride if they receive a “bac” with honors?".
