As a student I experience the most stress/fear when...

I am not prepared for a given class or exam.

I am obliged to consider the future. I consider how many opportunities I've missed or neglected.

I feel as though my writing is inadequate, that I am not as creative as I would like to be, that I cannot come up with an innovative solution to a problem, when I have writer's block.

I feel unsure about my level of comfort with the material, and have to take an exam in the near future. This stress can be intensified if my grade will somehow affect my performance outside the school context. (e.g. Needing good grades to be accepted into college.)

I have a lot of assignments, exams, and work to do, but no time to accomplish it all in time.

I have a lot of work to do all at once. I often am unable to start anything when I have to much work to. This leads to quite a bit of procrastination.

I have many assignments due on one day and I need to properly organize everything. I always worry about how to find the most efficient way of allocating my time, and I am afraid that I will not be able to get everything done by the due date.

I have many major assignments (tests, papers, etc.) to work on at the same time.

I have many tests, essays, and projects due within a short period of time.

I have to write an essay but have procrastinated.

I haven't done my homework.

it's finals period.

Tests are significantly above the level of knowledge and preparation I have, especially when that's unexpected.

Discussion

While both American and Russian students express that they experience fear during exam time or when they haven't completed their assignments, American students seem more worried about and overwhelmed with time constraints. A lot of students stated that they have issues with procrastination and many assignments due around the same time. I wonder if the Russian education system somehow prevents the overlapping of assignment due dates and exams, as opposed to the American system where such problems occur regularly.

I felt that the both the American and Russian responses were very similar. It seems that students in both countries feel the most stress when they are unprepared for class or when they have to take an exam.

I agree with Yaprak - our sources of stress or fear seems to have similar roots, except that many of the American students expressed a sense of time constraint and panic - of overall feeling overwhelmed. This idea didn't come across as much in the Russian posts; one explanation I can think of is that Russian students in university study everything in the same 'department' so to speak, and maybe as a result university exercises are assigned in a way that avoids excessive overlapping.

The American students often mentioned that they feel fear when they have many assignments due at the same time, while Russian students did not mention this issue. Both feel stressed about their exams and when they are not prepared. Also, one of the Russian students mentioned fear about answering the questions of a difficult professor. I thought this was interesting, because none of the American students mentioned fear of answering questions. This might be related to how in American universities the relationships between professors and students are closer, so there is less fear of answering questions.

It's no use crying over spilled milk..

The American and Russian students responded that being unprepared, or having an exam provided the most stress to them.  The American students from Brown also focused on stress resulting from having too much work to do in a short period of time.

We all seem to have similar fears about not being prepared for class, or an exam. It is true that the American students seem more concerned with time constraints.. I wonder what make this so? Are we generally less motivated as students and so, run out of time?

The difference in answers makes me wonder if exam periods are more structured in Russia, meaning that Russian students don't ever encounter the situation of having two exams in one day or several assignments due in succession, as sometimes happens here.

I was upset to read that someone doesn't have any friends in school! I hope you get to communicate with us a lot through CULTURA!

I think this was the "exercise" where our views converged the most!

This seems to a be a universal - students have a hard time coping with a lot of work at once and get stressed out when they fall behind.
