Discussion

Pierre

I'm not sure what that person meant...maybe someone else can answer?

I found it interesting that the Americans have a very romanticized view of the French, claiming obsessions with wine, cheese, art, architecture, etc   while in reality the French by their own admission seem to be much more 'obsessed' with practical things like politics, money, and football

Pierre,

idiosyncracy is the tendency to do things, behave and stick to certain interests in a way peculiar to yourself. It is usually neutral; it also means "a bit bizarre." Here it means being conservative when it comes to habits and manners -- being unwilling to accept new ways of doing things, even if they are more effective or more convenient just because you see a special value in doing things the way you are used to. Like, the croissant should be a breakfast, a couple of glasses of wine should be drunk over lunch break on weekdays, every woman should wear a fancy scarf, etc. What do you think?

From the responses, it looks like the Americans and French interpreted the question differently. The American responses cite several aspects of French culture...art, food, wine while the French said things relatiing to current events and politics. "Obsessed" means that something fills the mind continually. Even if the French drink lots of wine and eat bread and want to maintain their culture, those things may not be what is on their minds all the time.

I agree with the above comments. I also found it interesting and somewhat surprising that the Americans wrote "America" twice as something the french are obsessed with. Furthermore, one word that appeared a lot on the French side and not at all on the American side was "money". Maybe this because Americans think of French to be a more socialist country. What do you think?

I think that the French are in general much more politically conscious than Americans. In previous discussions, you guys also commented on American culture. Actually I think in the subject the Americans actually wrote down what Americans see of France. Whenever we think of France, we thinking of the "tourist-y" France with all the wine and cheese and assume that that's what the French do all day. In general, Americans have no idea about the politics of France, and I don't think we really care. Maybe that's why so many countries make fun of Americans... :-/

The american answers to this question is very "touristy." It seems that we answered the question based on the stereotypes we have about France: the good food, art, love, etc etc etc. It is also very interesting that the subject of politics is a very prevelant subject in young adults in France. It could be that MIT does not have very many students interested in politics, otherwise perhaps we would see different answers!

I found one answer "les immigrés".

What is your opinion about "les immigrés"?
