So I think becoming a mother at such a young age is becoming more common. At MIT, i don't see undergraduate students who have kids though (age range: 18-22). I guess perhaps it's because single moms at such a young age usually don't go to college. They can't handle both school and a kid.But sometimes, there are very brave women who managed to do just that. My friend knows personally an MIT student, who graduated about 3-4 years ago and currently is a graduate student at MIT. She became a mother at about 19, yet managed to double major and have a GPA of 4.8/5.0 or something. i think that's amazingly admirable. Personally, I am not against having kids at a young age. But i disagree with the attitudes of some young mothers that once they have kids, they can't realize their dreams any more. I believe anything is possible, as long as you have the will and determination :)

Maternity leaves in the States depend on the companies. Most companies i believe offer 7-8 weeks of paid maternity leaves. But yes, at big companies where there is a lot of competition, even if women are given the maternity leaves, they would choose to go back to work asap to maintain/protect their positions.

So i think our french class doesn't represent the student distribution well... At MIT, 10% of the students are international. Our class just happens to have a lot of international students. Personally somehow i think the American students don't like to study languages that much. Perhaps they are bored with all the language classes at high school.? For Boston... umh i would say out of 10 people, 5 would be white, 3 asians and 2 african americans. Boston has a pretty big community of asian americans.

There are so many nobel laureates and famous men at MIT and i can't say who is more prestigious than who! My personal favorite is Noam Chomsky. Basically, he is the father of modern linguistics and a major figure of analytic philosophy. I read a few articles he wrote and they are amazing. During the Vietnam war, he was a leading opponent (and i am from Vietnam so that explains the bias)

Jamie Kang, L'amie dont je parlais précédemment a eu sa fille "par accident", mais elle ne regrette rien, en revanche je parlais avec une copine cette après-midi des personnes qui étaient avec nous au collège et j'ai appris que beaucoup de filles que je connaissais sont enceintes ou ont eu un enfant il y a peu de temps mais volontairement cette fois-ci et ont donc arrêté leurs études. We do have nurseries and day care centers in the U.S. so that parents can work while their children are being cared for during the day. Many of my friends growing up had working parents, so having baby-sitters was very common for them. I used to love when the baby-sitters were there if I was at a friend's house and when I became old enough, I loved taking care of my little neighbors. Also, I know a few people who had permanent "nannies" raise them (since both parents were doctors, with demanding work schedules). Of course, the nannies did not take the place of the mother in the children's eyes, rather acted as an aunt or close family friend, who got paid to take care of the house and children. One more thing: kids can start school as early as 2 in the U.S. so many parents send their children to school as early as that. This not only helps integrate them into the schooling system, but also frees up the parents' mornings/afternoons.
As for having children at a "young age" (of 16-19), this is directly tied to social and cultural convention. I agree with this assignment of "young age" too, but I think mostly because it is expected that we go through school, college, and graduate school and after that think about a family. I was surprised when i went to Chile to learn that many parents of the students around my age became parents around the age of 19-21. That's normal for them but thought to be too early/wrong for us. That being said, as the years of education and schooling increase, the acceptable age to have a family will also increase, maybe even to a point that women will not want to have kids so late in life.
Maybe it's sad that the girl you know had to stop her studies to raise her child, but maybe it's sad too that we are engrained to think that the only right way to live life is to first be educated to the fullest extent possible?

To answer your question, I do not generally travel during the school year. For the past few years, I've utilized my summers to work in other parts of the world (namely Chile, France, Canada, and Oahu). How about you? Do you like to work in other cities/countries? I know some universities have a requirement for their students to have an agricultural internship during one summer and an internship abroad the next summer. Is this the same for you?
No, we don't have different-colored glasses for alcohol. Most parties will give you a wristband of a different color if you are allowed to drink, but the cups are the same. (It's must easier to organize, this way :-p)

Some large campuses, though, do have their own bus services to help people get around. They look more like normal city busses, though, not school busses.
In large lectures, people come in late all the time without justifying themselves to the professor, and most professors won't really care. Some warn against it and have specific information that they give in the first five minutes that will help penalize the latecomers on an exam, for instance, but most don't. For smaller clase, you do want to give you professor an excuse ahead of time if possible, but that's because you are expected to be there and participate, and the professor will notice your absence. It is considered rude to have your phone ring during class, and is embarassing for the person with it. However, if it's on vibrate, many people still send SMS messages. Food and drinks are allowed- though usually people try to bring things that are quiet to eat and not disruptive to the class.
I suppose we are less strict in tha sense :-p I am, now, curious as to why you follow these rules. Do you do it because you respect your professor, or just because you know that this is how it's done?

Responding to Jessica's question about cars to come to school:
At MIT, most students live very near the campus. On weekdays, to go to their classes, students either walk, bike, or take a free MIT-sponsored bus that we call the "TechShuttle" or the "SafeRide" (just random names). As Mariya pointed out, these buses are not like the yellow school buses you may have seen in many movies. Those are for elementary and middle school students.
It is rare for college students in US to own their own cars, especially at MIT. This is because most students live very far from their homes since they come to MIT from all over US and from all over the world. Therefore, they are unable to bring their cars with them. A few students manage to bring their cars to MIT, but these students don't use the cars very often to go to class for two reasons: 1) because they are so close to the university that the car would be useless and 2) parking is tough and expensive, so if you can manage without a car, that is better.

Responding to Jessica's question about cars to come to school:
At MIT, most students live very near the campus. On weekdays, to go to their classes, students either walk, bike, or take a free MIT-sponsored bus that we call the "TechShuttle" or the "SafeRide" (just random names). As Mariya pointed out, these buses are not like the yellow school buses you may have seen in many movies. Those are for elementary and middle school students.
It is rare for college students in US to own their own cars, especially at MIT. This is because most students live very far from their homes since they come to MIT from all over US and from all over the world. Therefore, they are unable to bring their cars with them. A few students manage to bring their cars to MIT, but these students don't use the cars very often to go to class for two reasons: 1) because they are so close to the university that the car would be useless and 2) parking is tough and expensive, so if you can manage without a car, that is better.
