It is very interesting to see that your reaction to this situation is similar to our reactions. Nonetheless, many of you would prefer to accept the grade and not argue about it and see whether or not your score improves. This, in fact, illustrates somehow the idea of respect towards authority, since you obey your instructors opinion and decision of grading your exam the way he/she did, even though you believe that you deserve a better grade.
Now, in the "coffe break" forum you state that we (mit students=americains) are more subject to the rules and to follow autorithy. Nonetheless, here we prefer to argue and "defy" the authority in way to make justice of our grades, while you prefer to just accept the situation and be subject to the authority. In this sense you do not defy autority and you respect it, opposite to what is stated in the other forum. At the same time, this idea is also illustrated in other forums like the respect to police, among other things. Could you explain this contradiction in opinion? I do agree that we are subject to authority and to obey it, but I think you are subject to many similar rules, even though you might prefer to bend a little this rules.
How valuable are grades for you? I think an explanation of us being more forceful with our grades could be that grades are extrememly important to us, and that they can be extremely important to our future.
It is not unusual to get wrong grade here. In many classes homeworks(and tests) are graded by fellow undergraduate students (some classes are graded by graduate students and only few by professors). And sometimes they are not very attentive to details:). This means they browse through your work comparing answers with answer sheet and not reading what you actually wrote. So for example if your reasoning was right but you put a wrong answer you get zero points. So sometimes you get lower grade because of quality of grading, then it is a good idea to ask to regrade your work. Usually your score increases after this.
It would be interesting to know who grades your tests (or homeworks)? Do professors do this job?
Yes, I noticed that most people would say nothing about a wrong grade. While sometimes people can be argumentative just to raise a score, I am a teaching assistant and sometimes I make mistakes, so I think it is important to ask. Are any of you teaching assistants or teachers? Sometimes students come to me because I did not fully understand their logic.
Pour répondre à toutes vos questions:
Je pense que beaucoup de Français ne se plaignent pas de notes injustes, parce qu'il est difficile de savoir en droit qu'une note est injuste. Le droit n'est pas une science exacte.
Je suis moi aussi enseigant (chargé de TD) et je suis donc amené à corriger et noter des copies (devoir et examens) d'étudiants en Droit. Vu le temps que je passe par copie, je ne pense pas faire d'erreur, mais cela doit théoriquement pouvoir arriver. Quoiqu'il en soit la note s'accompagne toujours de remarques. D'ailleurs les remarques précèdent la note et permettent de la déterminer. Donc si les remarqes coincident avec la note, cette dernière n'est pas injuste... Quant aux remarques, elles relèvent souvent du pouvoir souverain d'appréciation du correcteur, donc dans tous les cas il n'y a pas grand chode à faire...
En plus, une note injuste à cela de bien qu'elle permet de se rendre compte très jeune que l'homme n'est pas parfait et que la vie elle même est parfois injuste.
