Equal rights for women means

choices that must be made are made by all members in a family, that women are treated with respect.
equal rights for women
equal treatment under law, equal pay for equal work, equal work opportunities
just that. Women and men should be treated equally, with complete disregard to gender. This means no affirmative action.
same rights as men
that all opportunities in society are gender blind.
that they are treated just as men are treated to the extent that is possible.
that they should not be discriminated
that women and men have the same opportunity
that women are given the same opportunities as men to choose from
that women shall have available all opportunities to succeed that men have
that women should be treated the same as men
they can vote, they are respected
they have the same privileges as men.
they should get what they truly deserve.
voting, no discrimanation
women and men should be indistinguishable from a legal point of view
women should be treated and respected as human beings made in the image of God, not objects of men's libido, and should be allowed to fulfill their hopes and aspirations without neglecting their convictions,

absolument normal!

Discussion

RE:Equal Rights

I'm curious. The French students were noticeably not as politically correct as the Americans on the subject of equal rights for women. Does this indicate a certain gender discrimination in France? I've noticed there seem to be more female French students in MIT than male students. Perhaps the ladies are migrating, eh?

discrimination

is diiscrimination against women or any other 'minority' currently a big issue in france?

Equality

There seems to be a lot more disagreement among the French over equal rights for women. In the US, all most everyone says they are for equal rights, though people sometimes disagree about the manner in which women's rights are made equal. What are the reasons behind so many negative responses on the French side? Is equal rights for women something many people are against in France, or is it just the current laws and regulations promoting equality that are causing people so much angst?

equality vs. equal rights

I think one think worth considering in this case, although an issue of semantics, is whether equality is the same thing as equal rights. I don't think anyone will dispute the fact that women who have the same skills and occupations as their male counterparts are paid less on average, leading to the conclusion that their is inequality between women and men. However, their is no legal restriction of their right to be paid as much as men. Otherwise, no woman would earn more than any man with the same job, which does happen from time to time. Perhaps equal rights is not an issue of equal treatment, but nearly the legal possibility of such. I feel the latter is in place in both France and America. Maybe I'm being trivial here, but I feel it explains possible misinterpretations of the sentence. Using the definition that I just mentioned, is there in fact an equality of rights between genders in France?
