Je suis d'accord avec les étudiants qui associent le travail à l'épanouissement personnel. Mais est-ce qu'il passe avant ou après l'argent?
I find it very suprising, that most of us have not used money for describing a good job. America is such a consumer nation, that it is difficult to understand how love for a job can take precendance over one's salary. One may love his/her job, but what if its not enough to feed your famil at home. On the other hand the french students have great emphasized money. How important a role does it play in job selection.
Also, a little away from our main topic...what would be an ideal minimum wage in France and how is it implemented
I think one of the greatest fears of the American public is ending up in a boring, do-nothing job. But more people are ending up in these occupations because they need the comfort of job that will pay the bills, and earn them the most money. "Economics" has become the most popular major at many universities across the United States because need for jobs in this field is growing. Less people are going into the arts or social sciences because, although their interests may lie there, it is not a reliable source of income.
It would be difficult, however, to convince someone to stay in their boring, do-nothing job forever. At some point, it is important to find something that interests you. I do believe that enjoyment from one's job is important, but it is in a close second to salary.
Frankly, being in a job that pays well is not a bad idea. Money can buy lots of happiness in this consumer society.

Je suis d'accord sur le fait que l'argent permet d'acheter beaucoup de choses dans une société de consommation telle que ton pays, mais comment acheter le bonheur? Qu'est -ce-que cela signifie concrétement pour toi?
Many Americans believe that they can find happiness through acquiring wealth and amassing material items. This belief has become a lot more popular over the course of the 20th century as a result of advertising. The average American sees over 300 ads per day, and most of them are trying to convince people that they will be happier once they have have purchased the product. This has certainly fed this belief that money brings happiness.
Personally, I believe this to be false. While money may alleviate some hardships that the poorer classes face, it certainly does not solve everything. Money cannot purchase things such as love or friendship that add to a person's well-being. So, while someone may think that their cash is all they need, any relationship in which the other person loves the money more than its owner is a poor one.
Are the French materialistic in comparison to Americans? What is your idea of happiness?
Bien sur, les Français aussi sont matérialistes. Qui ne le serait pas dans une société de consommation? Mais j'ai l'impression que c'est un trait beaucoup moins marqué qu'aux Etats-Unis ou tout semble toujours lié à l'argent et au fait de toujours vouloir réussir.
Je n'ai pas de conception précise du bonheur mais je sais que je n'ai pas comme but unique de gagner de l'argent.
Material objects don't always equate to happiness. But if I have a nice job, maybe I'll get more vacations per year to spend with my family and friends, possibly in my summer house in the Cayman Islands.
Also, the satisfaction of knowing that you can support your family, and hopefully future generations of your offspring, is a big incentive to get that high-paying job.

Cool l'histoire de la maison de vacances aux îles Caiman!!.. mais on peut être heureux sans une maison dans les îles!Tu as raison dans le sens où un job qui paye bien peut t'offrir bien du confort mais il ne faut pas que ton but premier soit de rechercher un un job en fonction du salaire qu'il t'apporte.
Si le travail que tu aimes faire t'apporte en même temps un bon salaire alors là c'est le rêve!!
C'est sûr aussi que l'argent est bon pour nous rassurer pour l'avenir et pour les choses que qu'on tu pourras apporter à tes enfants mais il ne faut non plus que tu leur apporte tout! Je pense que j'aurai travaillé pour cet argent et ils devront travailler pour le leur!Bien sûr cet argent leur servira d'aide et de soutien pour leur études...mais il faut qu'ils apprennent la valeur de l'argent par eux-même.tu ne penses pas?
Je trouve que les réponses concernant le travail sont beaucoup plus "fortes" du côté américain. En effet, vous parlez de passion, challenge, alors que du côté français, le travail correspond davantage à une épanouissement personnel. Nous ne mettons pas en avant le dépassement de soi par le travail.
Est-ce que pour vous, le travail est vrai un moyen de dépasser ses limites? Est-ce que dans le travail, les américains se fixent toujours des objectifs à atteindre? Les américains sont-ils des travailleurs acharnés?
Je suis d'accord avec Lucie. C'est vrai que pour les Américains, travail est synonyme de challenge. Est-ce-que des self made men comme Rockefeller autrefois ou autres sont des exemples qui vous marquent et vous influencent?
