Here in the US, police are often viewed as ignorant, violent and harsh. When I look at the words you associate with police, I see nothing but praise. I wonder, then, what is behind this distinction between the law enforcement agencies in our two countries. Why is it that we Americans can dislike those who are supposedly here to protect us?

Il ne faut pas exagérer, c'est assez partagé.

Moi personnellement je n'aime pas la police.
Je n'ai jamais eu de problèmes particuliers avec elle, mais on est obligé d'admettre que la police est un instrument de contôle social. Elle doit réprimer tout ce qui peut remettre en cause l'Etat ou les intérêts des puissants (l'exemple le plus récent étant quand même Gênes). Je ne peux concevoir qu'il y ait des gens qui vont faire quelque chose où ils ne pourront pas utiliser leur sens critique. "Tu dois taper ces gens-là" leur dit-on et ils doivent le faire sans se soucier des raisons...
De plus les policiers sont des gens "normaux", c'est-à-dire ils ont leurs faiblesses comme tout le monde (ils peuvent être alcoolique, dépressifs etc...) mais ils sont armés ! Je trouve cela extrêmement dangereux.

Enfin dernièrement pour information : en France on a eu récemment le procès du policier Hilbot. Il y a dix ans il a tué un jeune d'une balle dans la nuque. Et bien il a été acquitté !! Une balle dans la nuque, on voit mal la légitime défense...

It seems like police in France have less of the dangerous worries about police. People in the US tend to associate police with violence and guns. This isn't good since guns and violence can both lead to deaths. Is this such an issue in France, are many people killed by police?

It is true that police are "normal" people, too. They will make human mistakes, and so the system will never be perfect. But I'd much rather have an imperfect system with police than the chaos that would result without them.

Le mot police inspire appparemment une réaction beaucoup plus négative aux Etats-Unis. Les étudiants américains semble beaucoup plus marqués par la violence, que l'on retrouve d'ailleurs particulièrement dans leurs films et séries. La France est tout de même moins concernée par ce problème. En France, la police est souvent perçue comme garant de la sécurité. Elle se veut rassurante. Elle essaie de garantir une certaine protection et il me semble qu'elle est perçue comme tel.

De plus en plus,les francais manifestent une deception certaine concernant l'efficacite de la police.Pour beaucoup elle est incompetente et surtout n'est jamais la quand on en a basoin.
Mais surtout,ce sont les jeunes qui la condamnent sans arret .Ainsi des changements sont demandes par beaucoup pour reduire l'insecurite.

Like many of my American counterparts, I, too, have (or, perhaps had pre-September 11) a very negative view of police in the US. However, I think this is more a misplaced reaction to the attitudes of the US government to crime, its policy of long jail sentences and of finding ways to harass "suspicious people" and minorities and get away with it. Though I confess I am guilty of this, as well, I believe that the American distaste for police may be an example of "killing the messenger."

I was surprised that the French students do not tend to give the word "police" a negative connotation. I guess I was expecting a more "latin" reaction. I am from Argentina but have been in very close contact with Italian and Spanish people, and not so much with French people. I think I'm starting to realize that there might be very important differences between these countries. Anyway, I agree that Americans have a much more negative view than French toward this word.
