Discussion
----Although both the French and the Americans have very similar ideas about holidays, more French people mentioned the 'mountains' than the Americans. I think the 'American' side reflects 'New England' more than anthing else! There is no comparison between the France's Alps and New England's White Mountains (which aren't very high and are not good for skiing)!
----Well , this survey was definitely filled out by M.I.T. students , and you can see that very easily here . We associate word vacations to summer , beach , traveling , sun , holidays ,similarly to French students . But for us the vacation is even sleeping a little bit longer , or having a party or having just a little bit of free time without problem sets and assignements . It is interesting that some Americans would like to go to Europe for vacation while no French would go to U.S.A. ... I think that Europeans are aware that tourism is developped much better in Europe than in U.S.A. I also noticed that Americans do not even mention winter tourism, mountains and skiing . Well , my questions are : How long do you usually sleep per day during school year ? Where do you go during winter vacation? ----
----IAP means Independent Activities Period. It only exists at MIT as far as I know. This is a 4-week period during January, between the fall term and the spring term, when students are free to pursue any of their own interests. There are many activities on-campus during IAP. Students can take intensive classes such as French I, participate in 1-day events such as Charm School, work on some job, or even stay at home. Hence, most people at MIT would consider it a vacation time. ----Au revoir, Eladio.
